'Challenge brings change". Easy to say, yet difficult to do. Victor Frankl wrote, "when we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves", (Man's Search for Meaning, 1946). When we find ourselves in difficult situations, we have choice - remain in the pain, or seek support to move through. I know life's greatest challenges have brought incredible change to my life, but it hasn't been easy. You don't need to face challenge and change alone.

I work to create a non-judgmental space where I can hear and understand your experiences, while additionally offering reflection, feedback, and guidance for change. I believe that counselling offers a place where we can feel heard, validated and understood, but I also know that without encouragement for change we can feel stuck. The mind- body connection is a powerful one. Finding the balance between empathy and growth is unique for each person, and it is a dynamic we explore together.

I support adults and adolescents who are struggling with a range of mental health issues including anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, grief, substance use disorders, sleep disorders, compassion fatigue, moral injury, and others. My clients often arrive feeling at the end of their rope - lost, alone, angry, afraid, overwhelmed, thoroughly drained, hopeless, or sometimes just completely stuck. They want their lives to be better, but don’t know how to begin to identify steps to take or how to manage that change. They want help dealing with difficult emotions and they want their lives to make sense.

*I am currently accepting new video/telephone clients.* If you have found yourself reading this page, then you have successfully admitted to yourself that you may need some help. That is a very good first step towards feeling better. It is so important to find yourself a ‘good fit’ for this type of work. For this reason, I am offering a complimentary 15 minute telephone or video introduction to my services. This will allow you to interview me as a means to make the right decision for you. Generally, my goal is to provide you with an empathetic, compassionate ear in order to provide you with tools that you can work with on your own.

I know that clients are the experts about themselves. I understand that concerns are multi-faceted and can often be complex...being human can be complex so the challenges that are experienced by people often take some exploration. Those who will work well with my approaches will not be looking for diagnoses or quick answers but will be looking to gain new perspectives in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

Each one of us will struggle at some point in our lives, but these are particularly challenging times for many us. With lockdown, stress, anxiety, and depression are increasing, as are unhelpful coping strategies. Relationships are being tested. Many of my clients are seeking to feel calm and experience more emotional balance. Others are deciding that now is a good time to start the healing process from a past traumatic experience. Another common goal for clients is to start living in line with their values, or what they truly want in life.

I believe in the mind-body connection, and how distress impacts how we show up in our lives & relationships. I trust clients instinctively know what to do to feel better, and that I spark their insight by allowing someone to first feel heard and understood. Clients and I often explore how to take the charge out of distressing emotions and/or experiences that underlie their presenting concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression, work/life/relationship stressors etc). Living with type-1 diabetes myself, I also support people in reducing T1D-related distress in order to feel more confident managing this chronic condition.

What type of mental health professional is right for me?
Some of the most common types of mental health providers in V1C are psychologists, licensed counselors, therapists, psychotherapists, and licensed clinical social workers, all of whom diagnose mental health conditions and provide individualized treatment.

Services offered, education and credentials vary by type of mental health professional. Each professional in V1C then may specialize in certain areas, such as depression, marriage counseling, or anxiety. Although many mental health providers are not licensed to prescribe medication, they may coordinate with a provider who can.

Both in-person and online therapy sessions are available from most psychologists.

How to find a specialist?
You can refine your search using the filters on this page. There are several categories you can filter by to find mental health professionals with the experience you are looking for. You may want to filter for CBT Psychologists in V1C, or Child Psychologists in V1C.

Many find it useful to use filters to view only psychologists that have experience working with certain issues, like V1C psychologists specializing in EMDR.

What method of therapy is right for me?
When it comes to treatment methods, there's no 'right way.’ Each method of therapy can be beneficial for a variety of issues. Psychologists in V1C specialize in therapeutic approaches such as CBT, EMDR, and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), among others. Finding a psychologist or therapist who is a good fit for you is the most important step to discovering what type of therapy, or combination of therapeutic approaches, will meet your individual needs. Learn what to expect from different types of therapy and how they work.

How to use my insurance?
Many therapists accept health insurance. Check to see if your insurance is covered. Feel free to discuss this when you contact the therapist.
