My name is Valerie Dessaulles and I am a registered clinical counsellor (RCC). I have over ten years in the helping profession initially as a paramedic and now as a counsellor. Trauma comes in many forms and presents in different ways; it can be difficult to pinpoint what caused symptoms or even what they may be. The first step is to acknowledge that you are not feeling yourself and that you want help to get your life back together. It would be my pleasure to walk alongside you as we navigate this new territory and figure out what you need from counselling. It can be really hard to reach out, but know that you set the pace.

People are invited to draw from their own experiences and knowings to make decisions about how they wish to lead their lives. When we are up against problems in our lives, we often feel disconnected from what we desire most for ourselves. Issues never exist in isolation but are always influenced by their context. Life can be messy and I am here to talk about all of it. Some conversations I have with people include topics of trauma, violence, isolation, relationships, negative stories about self-worth, sexual assault, and suicidal thoughts. As a grief and trauma counsellor, I am passionate about helping you on your healing journey. Trauma takes on many shapes and forms. As a result, we feel disconnected, alone, unsafe, lacking trust and can experience various trauma-related symptoms like anxiety, depression, anger and other emotional issues; our relationship with self is often affected, and we may engage in self-loathing, guilt, shaming, self-rejection and other behaviours. I am here to help you discover the path to safety within you and your environment, hold space while you navigate grief and emotions, and accompany you through the meaning-making.

It is inevitable that at some point in our lives we will all experience stress in one of its many forms. Difficulties with relationships, jobs, loss, health, trauma and even the relentlessness of a fast-paced lifestyle can lead us to feel overwhelmed and even helpless. Our bodies are designed to allow us to cope with the typical stressors that we come up against in daily life. Unfortunately, the systems we use to manage challenges sometimes become overwhelmed or fail to function in an optimal manner, this can lead to symptoms that can be difficult to manage alone.

Couple and Family Counselling is the focus of my practice. Relationship dynamics can be complex. I work with couples and family members in a collaborative and non-judgmental way to identify what is working and what is not within the family system. I also specialize in working with trauma, first responders (BCEHS and the RCMP) and with individuals who have experienced, witnessed, or perpetrated violence. I believe the details of my clients lived experiences are important and I will work hard to understand clients responses, and the larger context. I have over 10 years’ experience working with individuals, couples, and families.

Trauma informed practice is a key element of the services I provide.
Life events, world events, and growing day to day demands and stressors can challenge the limits of our resilience. That can make coping and dealing with everyday life harder and usual skills and resources can feel like they are dormant. You are probably here because you recognize you might need someone to join you on your path to growth and meeting your goals. You might be working hard on your relationships and need extra support along the way. Perhaps you are struggling with mental health and need a place to process your thoughts and feelings and find the tools that help you get back control and your true sense of self.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
