I work with clients to process childhood trauma, manage and navigate stress, explore their identities, and make changes in their lives that better support them and their needs.
You are welcome here. As a neurodivergent, queer, and disabled psychotherapist and supervisor, I work with clients to create a space for healing that meets your own unique needs and desires. You, in all your glorious complexity, are welcome here. I work with individuals and groups providing support through a trauma-informed, neurodivergent affirming, and social justice aware lens that supports you to process, find resolution, and create more freedom to be your favourite self, or to discover who that might be. I also meet the CRPO criteria for supervision and provide 1:1, dyadic, and group options.

As a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, I possess the advanced clinical training to meet clients wherever they are on their journey and support them in successfully reaching their goals for growth.
We can all go through challenges in life that leave us feeling confused, hurt, or unsure of how to move forward. When we work to discover and heal from old ways of thinking and feeling, in both mind and body, we can free ourselves from the unhelpful ties to the past and focus on a future that is of our creation. While providing a safe and compassionate space, my approach is creative, open, and flexible. I understand that just as painful experiences are unique for each person, so is their healing process.

Are you feeling weighed down by the pain of loss or trauma? Perhaps you’re experiencing the confusion that arises when life doesn’t go as planned. Or the self-doubt that can come from choices you’ve made in the past. Along with sadness, you might feel anger or a sense of shame. As a survivor of religious trauma, I have lived experience in the process of moving from this dark and lonely place to healing and hope. Whether you find yourself questioning the beliefs you grew up with or those of a group you chose to align with, we can gently bring what makes you uncomfortable into the light of day and move towards a brighter future.

Many people with anxiety, trauma & disrupted attachment benefit from a somatic (body-based) approach.
Welcome, courageous human. If you recognize your patterns (& still struggle to change the harmful ones) . . . if you find yourself overwhelmed/triggered all over the place by the state of this world, or your family, or your relationships, I see you. Come in to the courage room. (The good news: you're already there, in the courage room of your brain-body-spirit.) If you want to heal: betrayal trauma (including sexual assault, incest); anxiety or stuckness; or require support during a big transition, please reach out. (FYI, my hypnotherapy work is different than regular therapy. Learn more about both here: www.karenconnelly.ca).

Feeling disconnected from yourself and others, overwhelmed or shut down? Life is beautiful and full of heartbreak and stress. Break ups, life stress, difficult family dynamics and more, can change how we feel and function. Trauma is a human experience that we have all faced. If left unhealed, we may get triggered in our daily lives and feel out of alignment with ourselves. This could manifest as: anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, reactiveness, avoidance, and/or unhealthy relationship patterns that can prevent us from thriving. We are capable of healing, and sometimes we need support to get started.

I've worked therapeutically with diverse populations, in correctional and community settings, with families, adolescents and adults, for about 20 years. My approach is nuanced and responsive; my lens is anti-oppressive, attachment and trauma informed, queer and trans affirming, and psycho-dynamically and somatically attuned. To me, this means listening to, and noticing with you, communication from various verbal and non-verbal levels. It also means witnessing and acknowledging cultural, systemic, and familial legacies of power and oppression and their impact on our internal and external lives.

My areas of specialization include individuals struggling with life transitions, perfectionism, procrastination, trauma, anxiety, and depression.
As a psychotherapist, my goal is to work with you on developing a more satisfying and fulfilling life. If you are feeling stuck, your anger keeps getting the better of you, you don’t seem to be able to communicate your thoughts and feel misunderstood, or you have been feeling that life has not been as enjoyable as it once was, then therapy can be a very helpful for you. In therapy, we can work together on gaining a better understanding of ourselves and what makes us act and react in the ways we do, how to change that cycle, how to communicate our needs and boundaries to our loved ones, and how to resolve distressing situations.

Everyone comes to therapy for different reasons. Sometimes it's a more immediate or situational concern (ie relationship breakdown), while other times therapy is sought out because of a long standing or historical issue (ie mental health diagnosis). What I have learned over my many years of practice is that it takes a tremendous amount of courage to reach out for support. But change is possible. Realizing that you are not alone in your struggles is very powerful. Having a safe and nonjudgmental space to process your concerns and establish a path forward- in a way that is meaningful to you- is what I believe every client deserves.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
