Hi there. Whether you are seeking therapy during a time of crisis, looking to address an acute issue or wanting to better understand yourself and what has shaped you, I would be honoured to walk along side you and guide you on your healing journey. I have spent the last 10 years specializing in the field of trauma and attachment. My work oscillates between assisting you to develop strategies to feel more grounded in your day to day life, as well as, tuning into the bigger picture of what shaped you and the meaning you have made of these experiences in order to lead to more meaningful healing and balance.

I have training in prolonged exposure therapy for PTSD and particular expertise in providing dialectical behaviour therapy.
Managing intense emotions, impulsive behaviours, and interpersonal relationships can, at times, feel incredibly challenging. I have extensive experience supporting clients with borderline personality disorder, mood and anxiety disorders, a history of trauma, and substance use challenges. I have worked specifically within the LGBTQ2S+ community, helping clients navigate sexuality, gender, and relationship issues.

My practice is trauma-informed, and rooted within broader frameworks of social justice.
Are you new to counselling and therapy? Are you unsure of where to begin, feeling nervous, or perhaps even skeptical? Does it feel easier to be self-reliant, down-play your own needs while focusing on others, or just accept that you’ll always feel misunderstood? If so, therapy might feel like a big leap. We all learn to cope in ways that are completely understandable given life’s many challenges - if you are experiencing general anxiety, grief, or depression, or facing acute challenges in integrating back into a a post-pandemic world, or grappling with the realities of climate change, you do not have to go on this journey alone.

I work from a resolutely inclusive and trauma-informed model of practice and draw from my training in Internal Family Systems, EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Emotion-Focused therapy, and Psychodynamic therapies.
Life can feel too intense, sometimes. We all deserve support. Psychotherapy can be a powerful way to work through those moments in life when we can’t see a way forward- when we feel stuck, alone, disconnected, overwhelmed, and small. I specialize in helping with feelings of low self-worth, isolation, and shame, and support folks in regaining a sense of safety and presence in their bodies, choices, and relationships. Whatever you may be struggling with, you don’t have to do it alone. In the context of a strong therapeutic relationship, we can make sense of your experience and help you work through it, together.

I have experience helping clients understand, address, and overcome the multitude of issues they encounter as result of trauma, anxiety, depression, domestic violence, or sexual assault.
I am a cisgender woman, with Mi’kmaw and Settler roots; as a result, the holistic therapy I provide is rooted in an anti-oppression approach. I was lucky enough to earn a Master of Social Work from the University of Buffalo. I chose that program because, unlike most other programs, it offered a specialty in utilizing a Trauma-Informed Focus. I was also trained in using EMDR. I have six years’ experience providing therapy; first in the USA and now in Canada. I’ve also provided services in community settings like the youth justice system and a community task force created to help deal with the human trafficking epidemic.

I have several years experience working with individuals in crisis, struggling with their mental health, and those who have experienced trauma including grief, victims of crime, sexual assault, and domestic violence.
*Now accepting clients* For so many, the hardest part of therapy is putting themselves first. When you’ve come to the point of accepting that you need support in overcoming challenges in your life, you may feel overwhelmed, beat down, tired, and low. Many of my clients feel a sense of relief following the first session where they’ve taken the first step in improving their life, relationships, and happiness. Therapy is work, and requires dedication to the process and to yourself.

I’m also particularly passionate about helping people improve their quality of life by resolving trauma through Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE).
A strong and trusting relationship with your therapist is an important part of your therapy experience. My approach is non-judgmental, caring, authentic and collaborative. I will help you learn to validate your emotions, gain insight, and develop healthy coping strategies in order to achieve meaningful change. Since 2002, I’ve been helping individuals who struggle with a variety of difficulties stemming from emotion dysregulation including impulsivity, relationship conflict, self-harm, anxiety and depression. I have extensive experience from nearly 20 years as a therapist in the BPD clinic at CAMH where I primarily offered DBT.

Issues like anxiety, depression, and the effects of trauma, can sometimes take over and block us from seeing our skills and abilities for growth.
I believe in people before problems. My view is that we have abilities to overcome challenges, even when they seem insurmountable. What often stops us from living our lives the way we want to, is getting caught up by the problem, rather than finding solutions. I don’t shy away from problem talk, but I also encourage space for finding what works to live a more fulfilling life.

Many people with anxiety, trauma & disrupted attachment benefit from a somatic (body-based) approach.
Welcome, courageous human. If you recognize your patterns (& still struggle to change the harmful ones) . . . if you find yourself overwhelmed/triggered all over the place by the state of this world, or your family, or your relationships, I see you. Come in to the courage room. (The good news: you're already there, in the courage room of your brain-body-spirit.) If you want to heal: betrayal trauma (including sexual assault, incest); anxiety or stuckness; or require support during a big transition, please reach out. (FYI, my hypnotherapy work is different than regular therapy. Learn more about both here: www.karenconnelly.ca).

I have worked with many people experiencing major life transitions, trauma in its many forms, including loss, neglect, abuse, accidents, illness, war, immigration, racism and homophobia.
I have worked in the field of mental health for 30 years. This includes more than 20 years of experience working with individuals in a private psychotherapy practice. Said simply, I believe the intention of psychotherapy is to help people feel better and feel better equipped to live well. These objectives are determined by each client, as they consider their own context, influences, hopes and goals. I try to approach each person and each psychotherapy with intellect, curiosity, creativity and respect.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
