I use trauma and Polyvagal-informed therapies to listen to the messages your nervous system is giving you.
Does it feel like your emotions are a burden rather than a valuable message? Are you struggling to cope with the demands of school and interpersonal relationships? Are you and your partner feeling stuck in the same negative cycle? Emotions can often feel either numb or too big, getting in the way of authentic connection to self and others. I am here to help you reconnect with your body, with your emotions, and with yourself. I work with eating disorders, anger management, self-compassion, trauma and coping with big or numbed emotions. I work especially with teens but also adults of all ages, including couples.

If you are in the process of seeking counseling, I suspect it can be for any number of reasons or combination of reasons (stress, mood issues, current or historic family issues, past or current trauma, job related issues, personality conflicts, self esteem issues, simply wanting perspective in life, all sorts of other issues that would generally contribute to one simply feeling discontent or unhappy in life). During times like these, it is often helpful to have a person that is dedicated to helping you explore these issues in a caring and collaborative manner and in a manner based on experience and evidence based practice.

As a certified clinical trauma professional, I provide counselling to individuals with varying mental health concerns including grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, anger, personal and interpersonal relational issues, stress management, self-esteem, confidence, acute or chronic illness, and transitionary changes such as career, education or familial changes.
Welcome! Making the choice to engage in therapy requires courage, however it can be an empowering and positive experience towards a more fulfilling life. Over the past 14 years I have integrated my training and work in clinical and agency settings to offer counselling to clients looking to improve their mental wellness and overall functioning. Some clients report feeling ready when they cannot eliminate feelings like they are "facing an uphill battle" or that they are "overwhelmed" by daily life stressors and need support.

Substance use, trauma and mental health issues can put a significant dent in someone's quality of life. From simply being uncomfortable with how much you are using, or how it is affecting your life, to wishing you could shut your brain or your memories off; to being suicidal or at risk of overdose. You don't need to do this alone. Talking to someone who has seen and helped others with these things can be immensely relieving. If your teenager is going through these problems, it is also relieving to know they are talking to someone about them. Trying to parent a teenager while they are going through this chaos can be challenging.

I am experienced in providing support for BIPOC individuals, couples, and parents who are seeking support to break unhelpful cycles, move forward from infidelity, trauma or loss, and strengthen relationships with self and others.
Have you been struggling to feel connected to yourself and others? Do you feel overwhelmed with stress, loss, and pain? Many of us push away our needs, or we might be taught from a young age to hide our pain and be strong for others. This often leads to long-term issues for our mind and body. During our work together, I offer a custom approach for each of my clients. I start with understanding where you are now and the challenges you are facing. We will work together as a team to reach your unique goals in a safe, empathetic, and compassionate environment.

I utilize a trauma informed lens and also am trained in EMDR practices.
I believe that personal health encompasses not only the state of the body but our minds, emotions, and thoughts as well. My passion for psychotherapy comes from helping others achieve their goals and fulfill a wholistic picture of health by improving and integrating all areas of their lives. Since I began practicing in the field in 2018, I have discovered that one of the greatest rewards for me is supporting clients in learning new skills and gaining a different perspective often while using a sense of humor. While doing this, my goal is to help them utilize their own strengths and abilities to develop a happier and healthier life.

I typically work with adults and adolescents who are experiencing a variety of concerns, including, anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, and relationship problems. I often hear from clients that they need time and space to freely express and explore their thoughts and feelings with someone who holds an outsider's perspective and is also understanding, nonjudgmental, authentic, and offers expertise in the issues the client is bringing to the table. I can provide this space to help sort out your thoughts in order to find the empowerment and insight within.

Trauma-informed therapy involves working with parts of the brain that can't be accessed through talk therapy alone.
I accompany clients from a place of compassion, creativity, warmth, and humour as they move from the wounds of interpersonal, systemic, and intergenerational trauma (e.g., neglect, identity-based violence, childhood or intimate partner violence, premature death) towards fulfilling lives rooted in posttraumatic growth. In addition to working with clients who have experienced trauma and its related effects, I also work with clients who identify as experiencing stress (including anxiety disorders), sadness or depression, persistent guilt and shame, life transitions, grief, and existential questions related to life purpose and identity.

I am guided by attachment and trauma theory to help you unlock the door to the origins of your suffering, while believing that healing takes place in the present.
Everyone - regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or social standing - deserves competent, kind, and compassionate care. As Covid recedes, the life challenges facing younger, middle-aged and older adults, including transitions, relationships, loneliness, body image, sexuality issues, and concerns around meaning and purpose, to name a few, remain. I have significant life and career experience as a teacher and Guidance Counsellor working with adolescents, and as an administrator and coach working with adults and teams. I am eager to meet you wherever you are along your life journey.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
