When we feel supported to share our stories truly remarkable things can happen. Therapy can provide the time and space to explore who you are, how your story began, and where you'd like it to go. It offers connection and perspective as you navigate your internal and external world. There are innumerable reasons why one might consider therapy, and each one is valid and worthy of care. Feelings of depression or anxiety, challenging relationships, reduced self-worth, difficult decisions at work, home, or school, or major life transitions can all tax our abilities to cope.

My goal is to help my clients arrive at a deeper understanding of their needs and motivations in work and in play, across the full spectrum of their relationships, and amid the confusion and turmoil of challenging situations. This is a process no one should have to go through alone. Having benefited from self-exploration with skillful and empathic mentors, I am privileged to rediscover the essence of this work in every new therapeutic engagement. The uniqueness of each individual calls for a disciplined mutual curiosity that allows for the constant emergence of fresh information and potentially transformative insight.

All of us struggle at times with worry, or temper, or feeling insecure. But for some of us these problems take over- limiting our relationships, narrowing our sense of options in life. If you would like to claim back your life and your relationships from the influence of problems and problem stories, I would like to help.

My name is Lisa and I offer mental health OT services for individuals with ADHD (or suspected ADHD), anxiety, self-esteem challenges, and other mental health symptoms. As someone who was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, I understand some of the challenges of navigating mental health services and academic spaces without tailored support. If you experience difficulty in areas such as managing mental health symptoms, routine building, organization, procrastination, academic support, and completing daily tasks, then tailored OT support may be a good fit for you.

I was lucky to find my passion for social work early in life, coming from a family of social workers who specialized in marginalized youth. I decided early on that I too wanted to pursue a career that made a positive impact on the world and helped people to overcome their struggles and create a meaningful and empowered future. Overcoming my own personal struggles solidified my desire and passion for social work. I consider it a privilege to work with others coping with similar difficulties in their lives, and guiding them in their journey of overcoming their own struggles.

I know finding the right therapist can be really hard! I am here to support diverse individuals in whatever life stage they are at. I foster a space where clients can share their experiences openly without fear or judgment. I focus on depression and anxiety but understand that for each person this looks different and thus remain curious and open to understanding each of my client's experiences. I always maintain a culturally sensitive and trauma-informed lens in my practice. I encourage introspection, self-compassion and hope that through our sessions clients can eventually support themselves.

All of us can be presented with hardship, pain and overwhelm - sometimes without warning. It is in these stressful moments that we may struggle to find the tools to cope. Confronted by life’s challenges, it can become difficult to see the path forward.

In life we sometimes face questions that seem difficult to answer. We might stay focused on thinking through issues that do not have easily found solutions. I help you find paths of healing that are within. I want to help you find the strengths that are there; just currently hidden from view. When we allow your feelings to matter in session solutions become apparent. In my practice no feeling is ever wrong.

Therapy is not so much as "what do you need from me", but rather, "what do you need from you?" Who would you like to be for yourself? My humanistic background compels me to believe that clients often carry potential for growth that may be nurtured by the therapeutic relationship. While the specifics of clients' issues may vary, ultimately, many of us wish to be heard and understood. Although therapy may be directive at times, I often allow clients to lead and exercise their capacity for change.

The decision to seek therapy may arise for a number of reasons, including difficulties associated with depression or anxiety, feeling "stuck" in life, grieving, relationships, trauma, or addictions. You might also be in search of meaning in your life, or you want to explore making career or other life changes. Whatever your desire to seek support, therapy provides a safe and confidential space where you can make sense of what is not working for you, heighten awareness of yourself and your difficulties, and with support begin to accept yourself or make changes that are more reflective or who you are and what you want.

Since the mid-90s, I have worked with singles who fear commitment, gridlocked couples, and parents who worry about their teens. Informed by Bowen Family Systems Theory, I have learned what works (and what to avoid) to foster deeply meaningful relationships. I have published three books on fear of commitment, marriage and family therapy. I live in Toronto, Ontario with my wife - a child psychiatrist - our three boys, some fish and two gerbils.

Hey you! I’m Dorothy - thank you for being here. I’m a social worker & psychotherapist who specializes in supportive work with children, youth and families. I guide humans to be gentle and curious with themselves, their stories, and their environments, so that they can practice new ways of being that are in alignment with their hopes and dreams. Sometimes, systemic oppression (i.e. racism, cisheteropatriarchy, colonialism, capitalism) can affect how we reach our goals. My practice is dedicated to exploring the ways in which supportive relationships can not only support our healing, but create more social justice around us.

Sometimes we don’t have the words to describe exactly what’s wrong with us. All we know is that we feel completely exhausted by all of it. We feel it in our bones. We’re having trouble keeping up with our lives and feel like we keep repeating the same mistakes — like we keep letting people down. We keep trying to fix it, but nothing seems to work. We might resort to hiding all or part of ourselves because we think it’ll just make it easier for everyone. But the loneliness we feel from hiding all or part of ourselves from our families, friends, and loved ones can feel insidious and insurmountable.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.
Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
