Though I typically work with male clients, I take an approach from which I believe almost anyone can benefit. I am not necessarily setting out to work with specific issues. However, clients who work best with me are those who seek to develop their own internal skills and coping mechanisms to weather whatever storms they encounter in life. While I do believe it is a noble cause to advocate in the wider environment for clients, I believe that reliable change must come from within, as it is within where we have the greatest control.
Generally speaking, I see clients (again, usually men but I do see everyone) who are experiencing marital breakdown and divorce, parental alienation, and domestic abuse victimization. I also provide support for many other common concerns such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, grief, and more. I work primarily using CBT, ACT, and person-centred modalities.
Men today often encounter many tragic messages of self-blame. Even other therapists can fall into the trap of using negative or shaming language such as the "toxic masculinity" narrative. I abhor and avoid such messages. In contrast, I work from a strengths-based approach that prioritizes dignity and unconditional positive regard.
