I work with people who experience intense emotions with the aim of coming to understand these feelings as not only real, but also important, valid, and meaningful. Generally, this includes teens (13+), young adults, adults, and couples who are hoping to work toward managing their feelings in a way that allows them to interact with the world, and their loved ones, more effectively. As someone who focuses on this area of feelings work I have developed strong skills working with anxiety, BPD, ADHD, trauma, and grief, as these areas are often interconnected. Clients often describe me as warm, kind, and (at least a little bit) funny.

I work with people who are undergoing any experience that might be called 'transformation.' Sometimes transformation is forced upon us by trauma, and sometimes we are called to it from within. Either way, it can be difficult to navigate alone. I can provide you with a compassionate space where you can process pain, come to understand your patterns, and grow into your truest self. By using a holistic approach that gets to the roots of deep issues, we will move at your own pace to uncover pathways toward healing. This involves understanding the past, exploring emotions in the here-and-now, and tapping into the body's wisdom.

Sometimes life can take unexpected turns and we can find ourselves feeling lost, wanting something to be different. We may be feeling anxious, irritable, depressed, and we may be having some difficulty coping effectively. Sometimes we may need an objective perspective to help recalibrate our inner compass to better navigate our way to a more meaningful, purposeful, and fulfilling life.

Being in a culture that asks you to shrink yourself, your needs, and your beliefs can be exhausting. This may be impacting how you experience your mood, body, food, relationships or the spaces you occupy. There may be ways that you protect the more tender parts of you that get in the way of being more in line with your values, and finally having the relationship with yourself and others that you have always wanted. You might be feeling overwhelmed by changes you need to make and simply don't know where to begin. You deserve to live a rich, expansive life, and to have deep, meaningful connections.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
