Significant experience with first responders, LGBTQ, substance abuse, Borderline Personality Disorder, and suicide/self-harm.
Currently offering remote sessions (video). Accepting new clients. I am a Clinical Supervisor. When most clients come to me they don't know where to start and they haven't been able to overcome their problems alone or with their friend's advice. My clients need someone to listen, someone who knows about the fake face, someone who can help them understand "why"; and help them find a way to get healthy. I have a Masters in Counseling Psychology from OISE UofT the University of Toronto where I learned to use research-supported methods to help clients be empowered. Clients are always the experts on themselves.

You may come to therapy because you feel lost, alone, angry, confused, empty, fearful, betrayed, or hopeless. Or not. You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, identity, relationships, unwanted thoughts and feelings, addictions, shame, or guilt. Or not. You may come to therapy because you want to understand how your early experiences are shaping your life. Or you may be curious about the therapeutic process, more generally. Or not.

I am a registered psychotherapist and offer psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. I hold a PhD in Sociology, which gives me a particular appreciation for how psychological and relational difficulties are shaped by life experiences and broader social conditions. I see therapy as a unique conversation involving me listening with a non-judgmental curiosity to help you similarly listen to yourself. This approach enables us to explore the experiences and difficulties that bring you to therapy, whether that be a specific crisis, a period of transition, feelings of "stuckness," relational patterns, emotions that trouble you, or an interest in personal growth.

Hi there, and welcome! My name is Julia and I’m a Registered Psychotherapist with 13 years of experience working in counseling and mental health. I practice a creative, integrative approach that I tailor to each client. I believe that traumatic events (i.e. abuse, bullying, violence) lead to mental health challenges. My approach helps you uncover, understand, and process the awful things that happened to you. As scary as it sounds, talking to a supportive, skilled therapist about your trauma does make you feel better. In fact, my clients often share that they feel less symptomatic, understood and lighter after just one session.

I consider it a privilege to work with my clients to feel better amid life's many challenges. Whether it's through modifying habitual negative thinking, developing greater self-awareness or moving past unhelpful patterns in relationships, I help my clients make positive changes in their lives. In therapy, we begin with a thorough exploration of your background and concerns, then collaborate to set concrete therapeutic goals to improve mental health and well-being, manage symptoms, and create meaning in life. My training includes degrees from Yale University and University of Toronto, and I've been in private practice for ten years.

I approach therapy with the belief that everyone has a life story that is worthy of being met with compassion and empathy. My work background, combined with my identities as a member of the Asian and LGBTQIA+ community equips me to work from a strength-based, trauma-informed, and anti-oppression framework. Additionally, this intersectionality assists me in maintaining a culturally sensitive and intersectional lens that is rooted in compassion and curiosity.

We often come to therapy wanting to feel better, perhaps to change old patterns that don’t align with the vision we have for our lives. Anxiety, depression, anger, PTSD, or personality disruption, difficulty in relationships and addiction are symptoms arising from deeper core (shame-based) wounds. These problematic symptoms surface as a way to cover up painful, enmeshed emotions that are unseen and unheard. I therefore aim to go to the source not the symptom: I specialize in emotion, in building self-compassion, and addressing toxic shame.

How do you find hope? You're a fighter, and you've always had a clear sense of what matters and the life you aspire to have. You know where you want to go and how you want to feel. But right now, you're encountering obstacles that seem to stand in your way, preventing you from reaching the life you envision. Feelings of sadness, anxiety, or hopelessness might be keeping your feet firmly planted, leaving you feeling stuck.

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
