Our most fundamental need is to be seen, heard and accepted as we are. It is no surprise that the strongest determining factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. Positive change happens when we become more like ourselves rather than trying to be something others want us to be. Our team of experienced psychotherapists are here to support individuals, couples and families with their journeys towards greater wholeness and authenticity. We work with the mind, emotions and nervous system to break unhealthy thinking patterns, unburden emotional pain and trauma, build healthy self-esteem, and find deeper meaning in life.

Life can be overwhelming as we long for acceptance and belonging in a world that is stressful and lonely. Losses and transitions in life impact us in waves of grief and emotional pain. Relationships may be conflictual, confusing and at times, we feel like we are "not enough". We need clarity and connections in our lives and relationships. Conversations on the Bridge offers you a safe, confidential space to find out the possibilities of who you are at this moment, and to discover the opportunities of who you may become.

People come to me because they want to feel relief from suffering; happiness, joy, ease, confidence, connection, and clarity. I work mainly with professionals in healthcare, emergency services, social services, education, energy/body work, and Indigenous services; however, all are welcome to inquire. I understand the unique needs of individuals working in helping professions and the health and relational consequences of chronically stressful workloads and systemic oppression. It can be difficult to find the “right” therapist for those working in such specialized fields. Please reach out and let's see how I might support you.

You’re dealing with a lot; feeling guilty and confused. Guilty for not loving more or trying harder. They’re telling you these things - it must be true, right? They were charismatic and charming, showering you with PDA and compliments, but it all changed. You’re embarrassing they say, and now you feel trapped and broken. You’re not alone. It's not your fault. You Google “abusive relationships” and read about narcissistic abuse. That’s your life! You need guidance. I know this because I needed it too. I chased “good enough” trying to “behave well” for my family. After college, I married and divorced a narcissist who always blamed me.

As my teacher would say: "Our stories might vary but in the realm of feelings, there is no discrimination." We feel things, and we go through ups and downs. Sometimes, we need each other to stand tall in the midst of chaos by being received, heard, and understood – and other times by exploring the root cause of our pain. I’m a strong believer of a human’s capacity for resiliency and growth, therefore our work will be a mixture of support and opportunities for deep self exploration and improvement of your life.

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviours. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualisation, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
