Your reasons for coming to therapy and your experiences are unique to you. Many of us have to navigate difficult relationships and complex life challenges while being told we just need to "push through" or "get over it". Though we find creative ways to be resourceful and resilient, the experiences stay with us and leave our bodies carrying the impact. We all deserve to connect with our vitality and I believe everything you need to heal resides inside yourself. Together, we will support the mobilization of your internal resources so you can live in alignment with your authentic self and have healthy meaningful connections.

Life is an incredible journey that can be invigorating and magical but can also challenge and knock us off our feet. There are times when we struggle to find the joy in life, to process our emotions and to be overwhelmed by our feelings. It can be challenging to know what is our next step when we are drowning in the stressors of life. It takes incredible courage to recognise when we are struggling, and understand that it takes strength to reach out for support when we have tried everything in our toolbox. My role as your therapist is to understand and meet you where you are at, and support you in your journey of healing.

I help second-gen immigrants who keep themselves small, invisible and compliant to live unapologetically and authentically so that they can thrive in their most cherished relationships. As a child of immigrant parents, you likely straddle two cultures with opposing values. In Asian cultures like mine, you're expected to sacrifice yourself for the good of others, and in Canadian culture, you're expected to be assertive. There's a way to live so that you're respecting your family and culture, and being true to yourself. I help you to own your needs and desires, set healthy boundaries, and be genuinely happy in your relationships.

What can I say here? For some people, everything in life fell in line exactly how they hoped it would. For most of us though, things happened along the way that irrevocably transformed the kind of person we were meant to be. While we can never go back, we can work together to understand what happened, how you're feeling now, and how we can make you feel better. I know how hard it can be to take that first step, but I'm here for you when you're ready. I believe in the principle that people don't need "fixing," they need understanding, support and compassion.

My approach is grounded in the belief that we are all doing the very best we can with the resources, knowledge and experience we have. That being said, we can always continue to learn and grow….and this is where we start. I have spent the bulk of my professional life supporting people with compounding experiences of marginalization and structural vulnerability, including experiences from childhood that may continue to linger and live in this very moment. I believe in the practice of weaving together therapeutic strategies to ensure individualized and personalized care.

Have you experienced a stressful or traumatic life event that has impacted your ability to focus or cope with the everyday? Trauma continues to live in our systems long after the event has happened, sometimes remaining hidden until something triggers it to come to the surface. Trauma can manifest itself in a variety of ways, including physical pain, lead to anxiety, depression, attachment or relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, addictions, and can impact our perceptions leading to unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours. My clients report a reduction in their symptoms, describe feeling calmer, lighter, and more present.

Let's be real- life can get tough. You may be faced with challenges such as experiencing trauma or loss, navigating complex relationship or family dynamics, encountering discrimination at school or work, or overcoming financial stressors. These difficulties can be further amplified as a person of colour and being raised in an immigrant household. Naturally, hardships can evoke feelings of hopelessness, numbness, or anxiety. You may find yourself feeling stuck and unable to move forward. Or you may be relying on coping mechanisms that, while once helpful, no longer serve you, and struggling to break free from these habits.

Do you feel anxious and alone these days? Does it feel like no one is listening to you? Perhaps you've always been a little nervous, but were able to cope without any trouble. Now things have changed it's not easy to do your job or live without wondering what others will think. You want to do more living and spend less time being in your own head, and you've discovered this isn't easy to talk about. You don't want to burden your friends, and would they understand anyway? Still, this is impacting your life, your health and your relationship. Right now you probably don't talk about this with anybody. I can help.

Life is a precious gift, although at times it can bring forth unexpected challenges and changes that leave us feeling defeated, helpless, and overwhelmed. During these moments, you may feel alone and as though no one truly understands you or what you are going through. How do you move forward? The first step is acknowledging that there is a concern that you need to work through. The second step is recognizing that you do not need to face it alone- it’s ok to seek help.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
