I am also building skills in Somatic and Psychosensory work to integrate with these approaches.
Hi, I'm Kim. I have worked with people across the age span, individually and in families, for the past few decades. I am currently working with people who are interested in finding ways to better cope with strong emotions, complex trauma, mood disorders and building stronger connections in their relationships. I have a long history of working with children, teenagers and young adults in particular and am often described as conversational, humorous and creative in my approach. I believe in being transparent, flexible, nonjudgmental and creating safe spaces where people feel heard and connected.

Are you feeling stuck or overwhelmed? Perhaps at a crossroad in your life and ready to take the next step? Or perhaps you would like to try something new, such as EMDR or bottom-up interventions. I invite you to reach out to discuss your therapy goals with me! I work with adults (16+) looking to heal from attachment issues (difficult relationships), trauma, life transitions, and nervous system dysregulation, but I specialize in young adults. I also have a special interest in working with Performing Artists looking to better manage stress on stage. In our work together, we may use somatic interventions, yoga, EMDR, or talk therapy!

My interdisciplinary approach allows me to offer tailored one-on-one and group yoga, coaching, and somatic therapy sessions, designed to promote healing, growth, and empowerment.
Hi, I’m Brittany Amell, a registered social worker (B.SW) and passionate facilitator of transformative practices, with a decade of experience across education, research, communications, and advocacy for holistic wellness. My academic journey, culminating in a PhD from Carleton University, equipped me with a profound sociocultural understanding of human behaviour and communication, which I integrate with my certifications in executive coaching, yoga, mindfulness, and Somatic Parts Work. For me, the personal is always political.

My professional experiences stem from working as a Somatic Psychotherapist for over 15 years in hospice palliative care, community organizations, and in private practice.
Accepting new clients. Many of us experience change as the uncomfortable space that bridges what was once our “normal” and our “new normal”. Whether it is chosen or imposed, change can cause feelings of isolation, vulnerability, sadness or anger. It can alter once predictable behavioral patterns such as sleep, action oriented tasks and social interactions. It begs us to reconsider our relationship to ourselves and the world in which we engage, which can feel disorienting.

Research towards my book "Multidimensional Healing" soon to be published by Austin Macauley revealed that unresolved childhood trauma underlies many common mental, emotional & physical health issues such as PTSD, HDD, anxiety, depression, chronic hypertension & auto-immune diseases. Therefore, I have trained in the trauma resolution methods EMDR, Internal Family Systems & Somatic Experiencing designed to reactivate embodied psychic trauma & facilitate its release. These methods are life-changing when they release the trauma blocking the flow of vitality, love and well-being.

I believe our bodies tell us important information and we need to listen to its unspoken voice. Through a somatic and humanistic approach of mind-body connection and embodiment practices, I work with clients to gently unlock trauma and shame to help them gain clarity, increase creativity, and move toward a more fulfilling and peaceful life as their authentic selves. Attachment theory, family systems, narrative therapy, and emotionally focused therapy can also be integrated and will be fostered depending on the unique needs of the client.

My approach integrates traditional "top-down" talk therapy, such as narrative and cognitive therapy, with an emphasis on newer "bottom-up" modalities, such as mindfulness and Somatic Experiencing.
For over 10 years I've been counselling people with a range of stressors and mental illnesses to manage and improve their quality of life, largely within a university setting. My interest and focus for private practice is in working with people suffering from the impacts of trauma, anxiety and emotional dysregulation in general, and with challenges related to chronic illness. It has been my privilege to work with clients from very diverse backgrounds in my career, and I welcome adults of all ages, genders, cultures, ethnicities and faith traditions.

Drawing on Internal Family Systems and Somatic Therapy, we will navigate the complexities of your experience.
Feeling anxious, caught in the cycle of people-pleasing or struggling with an eating disorder? Are you disconnected from your true self or struggling with relationships? Childhood trauma can have lasting effects that limit us, impacting our self-esteem, direction, and relationships. If you're navigating the conditioning from emotionally immature or neglectful parents, or if relationships don't feel safe, holistic psychotherapy can be your compass for healing. There's hope for breaking free from old patterns, knowing your true needs and desires, and living a life aligned with your authentic self, not just societal expectations.

Blending "bottom-up" somatic with "top-down" cognitive framing can create a holistic understanding of self and a bespoke roadmap for change.
Have you worked hard to change the way you think and yet struggle to change the way you feel? I may be able to help you. I am an RP in fully independent practice, and I believe that holistic, meaningful and lasting change can occur when we weave our body and our mind's voices and experiences into the narrative of who we are and who we aspire to be. If you have ever listened to your "gut" instinct, soothed yourself using breath or felt the urge to move to a favourite song, you have experienced the benefit of the mind-body connection! Together, we will deepen this connection therapeutically to encourage relief, change and growth.

Somatic Counsellors

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
