Based on my training and experience in body-based psychotherapy, such as Somatic Experiencing, I believe the body informs us if we listen.
Are you feeling stuck in your relationships or with your feelings? We all experience challenges at times and have normal periods of ups and downs. The difficulty is when we feel stuck – either in a particular mood state (such as depression or anxiety), in our reactions to triggers, or in our relationships. I approach counselling as a creative and collaborative process to tap into your innate wisdom, access your inner resources, and develop healthy coping strategies in a safe and supportive environment. I will see your strengths as well as your struggles. My goal is to guide you as you discover the path that is best for you.

My approach integrates a systemic perspective, combining somatic, attachment, and inner relationship principles.
Are you ready to dive deep into your emotions and form authentic connections? Have life events left a lasting impact on your daily life? Remember, you’re never alone in this journey. I firmly believe in our innate ability to overcome challenges, and sometimes, a little support can make all the difference. That’s where psychotherapy comes in.

Blending "bottom-up" somatic with "top-down" cognitive framing can create a holistic understanding of self and a bespoke roadmap for change.
Have you worked hard to change the way you think and yet struggle to change the way you feel? I may be able to help you. I am an RP in fully independent practice, and I believe that holistic, meaningful and lasting change can occur when we weave our body and our mind's voices and experiences into the narrative of who we are and who we aspire to be. If you have ever listened to your "gut" instinct, soothed yourself using breath or felt the urge to move to a favourite song, you have experienced the benefit of the mind-body connection! Together, we will deepen this connection therapeutically to encourage relief, change and growth.

I use a holistic approach blending family systems, the psychobiological approach, cognitive-behavioural, dialectical behaviour, attachment based, sex-informed, emotions focused, and somatic.
Relationships are at the core of feeling love and belonging. However, when our relationships are functioning poorly we can experience anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, grief, or anger. In this space, we will explore how early life relationships shaped your attachment, communication, and conflict patterns to connect them to the impact they are having in your current life. From there, we can develop healthy new patterns. I also work with couples on their communication, boundaries, intimacy, meeting needs, and trust. Together you will learn to communicate safely and predictably and co-create your ideal intimate life.

I work from an integrative approach which is rooted in a mindfulness, compassion focused, solution focused therapy that incorporates experiential, somatic, and emotion focused therapy.
Our work together involves deepening the connection with yourself, so you become aware of what you need, and how to give it to yourself. Through being present and mindful to our current experiences, we can start to become more sensitive and aware of our psychological, emotional, and bodily experiences. To engage with compassion, curiosity, and without judgement can bring greater clarity into what is troubling us, and bring us closer to living in greater alignment with our most authentic self.

Connection to self and others gives life meaning. It can be difficult to feel connected when we feel depressed, isolated and disconnected or unsatisfied in our relationships. I also work with couples using the psychobiological approach to couples therapy and assist couples towards secure functioning. In addition, I offer workplaces workshops to employees on mental health and support to managers. Learn more about me at: www.tcapc.ca

Our sessions may involve mindfulness and somatic work like breath work, grounding, or even some movement or creative expression that fits your interests and goals, as well as implementing new skills, and resources, and drawing on supports.
Having the right therapist to talk to and collaborate with on your goals, challenges, and emotional turmoil can help put things into perspective and create a plan for success. It can be challenging to navigate the world in the face of oppression, disability, stigma, and other barriers to success. My therapy draws on inner strengths and creative expression to manage complex thoughts and emotions, and increase feelings of empowerment. I emphasize meaning-making, the importance of self-efficacy, and perceived control of experiences in the healing process from cognitive, somatic, and social-constructivist perspectives.

This is done through developing collaborative relationships, engaging in somatic work, and helping you create your own pathways to repair.
Gender-based violence, restorative approaches and narrative therapy have led me to work internationally. Locally, I have spent 25 years working for a trauma-informed community-based organization and for the past fifteen I have also worked for the Canadian Armed Forces. Currently I continue to speak publicly and train others about domestic violence. I co-founded the Canadian Domestic Violence Conference when I saw a need to bring more light to the subject. I am available to help couples work through the damages caused by domestic violence as well as to help individuals repair the harm done to them so they can move forward.

Somatic Counsellors

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
