You’re carrying a lot, and part of you knows it’s time for something to shift. My ideal clients are sensitive, thoughtful people who feel stuck in stress, self-doubt, or old patterns but are ready to reconnect with their confidence and calm. Together, we’ll work at both a practical and deeper level; through therapy, hypnotherapy, or yoga therapy to create balance, release what no longer serves you, and help you feel grounded, lighter, and more at ease in your life. My goal is to always meet you where you are at to ensure you feel supported in every step of your journey.

What keeps us feeling like we are in limbo/stuck? Unresolved issues and traumas can keep us feeling and/or thinking that we are not progressing as we'd like, resulting in many feelings of being overwhelmed, burned out, and experiencing physical/emotional pains. Over 20 years of clinical experience, I can help you to discover and identify the core issues/patterns/beliefs, while inspiring hope and courage while you walk a more integrated path living life with more joy and abundance; with feelings of rejuvenation and release; and with an expanded self-awareness, emotional balance, and clearer thinking.

Today’s world is a challenging place and the stresses that come from it are often unavoidable. Stress can affect your body, your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. How we respond to our stress is what is important. If we learn to respond positively, we can learn and grow in ways we had never imagined. My goal is to support you on your journey to better psychological, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. I have particular interest in the areas of anxiety and stress management, disordered eating and body image, domestic violence, communication and healthy relationships.

At especially stressful times in our lives, we may have felt anxious, depressed and fearful. We may resort to "self-medicating" our painful feelings through the use of alcohol, drugs, eating too much/little, "zoning out" through process addictions such as gambling, gaming, porn or even playing bingo. When what we are doing is actually contributing to our problems - we may feel even more out of control and fearful. It can be helpful at times like these to talk to someone who can help us make sense of it all. We begin to make positive incremental changes and our stress level may go down. Life begins to work again.

Work isn’t just work—it’s where so much of our stress, self-worth, and time lives. Maybe you’re feeling anxious about your job, burnt out, stuck after getting fired, or dreading Monday because of your boss or coworkers. With this on top of your personal life, family, relationships - you’re tired of the stress and pressure. You want a fulfilling career that gives you purpose, meaning, and dare-I-say - happiness? Maybe you’ve tried talk therapy before but traditional approaches aren’t working for you. You want something different, something that produces real, lasting change. If this is you, then you’re in the right place!

Anxiety, stress, anger, fear, grief, and depression show up differently for everyone. You might be feeling overwhelmed or isolated, unsure of where to start. Your self-talk might be very negative even if you're "doing great" on paper. You might be avoiding people and places, or struggling with conflict or big life changes. I also work with people who are having a complicated relationship with their body - maybe it's due to a medical condition, insomnia, struggling with eating, or trying to follow health advice that involves hard changes. Maybe your loved one is unwell and you're trying to provide support but keep yourself together.

How do you find the best counsellor for you? This is a difficult choice and often being open and communicating with your counsellor will ensure optimal healing. I come from an acceptance of where you are in your journey. I do not believe the goal of counselling is “counselling itself”, but to find a way to move forward in your journey. "To feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health” (Bessel Van der Kolk, 2014).

I am a registered practicing counsellor in Melfort and Martensville. I have taken additional training in addictions counselling, though I am able to treat the individual or a couple as well. My areas of interest include, adoptee trauma/support, anxiety, communication, attachment and depression. I meet clients where they are at and take a supportive role in guiding you to a more adjusted, healthier you. I use multiple techniques and tools to assist the sessions, but like to align them with what works best for each individual client, therapy is not one size fits all.

What is the relationship between weight management and mental health?

Mental health can be significantly influenced by one's physical health, so overall improvements in one's quality of life as a result of improved physical functioning from weight loss can have an overall positive impact on an individual's mental health and allow them to engage more readily in everyday activities. In addition, many strategies used to manage weight, such as exercise and maintaining a healthy diet, are also associated with reducing the symptoms of common mental health conditions, such as anxiety or depression. Individuals may also benefit from the improved self-esteem and self-efficacy that can come with successful weight management.

What is the psychological approach to losing weight?

While there are no specific therapy modalities specifically for weight loss, common psychological therapies can be highly effective in helping clients make lasting lifestyle changes. This may be called the "psychological approach" to weight loss because it does not rely on physical interventions, such as medication or weight loss surgery, to help clients lose weight. Weight loss counselling can be used in addition to or instead of such physical interventions. Some clients simply seek therapy to address the challenges that may accompany weight loss in general, including negative thoughts surrounding their body, disordered eating patterns, or difficulty completing daily tasks as a result of their weight challenges. In such cases, therapists will often utilise behavioural coaching or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques to help clients understand how their thoughts may be influencing their diet and physical activity patterns.

What type of therapy is commonly used in weight loss counselling?

Weight loss counseling often involves a combination of therapy and psychoeducation. Common techniques used by weight loss counselors include journalling, thought diaries, and other Cognitive Behavioural Therapy strategies that encourage clients to consider how their feelings about their weight loss impact their mental health. Weight loss counsellors may also teach clients mindfulness exercises, which can be used by clients during and after eating to be more aware of physical cues from their body surrounding eating. Some clients looking for weight loss therapy may also benefit from group therapy approaches, which utilise the power of social connection and accountability to help clients adhere to their weight loss plan.

Is therapy recommended for individuals undergoing bariatric surgery?

While therapy is not a requirement for individuals undergoing bariatric surgery, many individuals undergoing weight loss surgery may benefit from seeing a counsellor. Prior to surgery, counsellors can help clients decide whether surgical weight loss is a good fit for them and assist in surgery preparation. Post-surgery, counsellors can assist clients with the psychological component of maintaining their weight loss, as well as help clients navigate any postoperative pain. Throughout the surgical process, therapists can help clients process body-image challenges that may come with dramatic changes in weight, as well as manage symptoms of anxiety or depression that may accompany the major life changes bariatric surgery can bring.
