My approach is 2SLGBTQ+ affirming and eclectic, including cognitive, narrative, and compassionate elements.
I work with all sorts of people, but 2SLGBTQ+ issues and the challenges of being queer in a majority heterosexual world are often the centre of conversation. I focus on helping people to understand and express their identity in the context of the intersection between 2SLGBTQ+ issues and the mental health struggles that accompany this journey, such as anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Many people in and out of the 2SLGBTQ+ community are struggling with anxious or intrusive thoughts, dealing with family rejection or loss, and experiencing depression. It's time to take control of our identities.

People would want to contact me for support if they are looking for someone who can provide connection, trust, and solutions in an meaningful and efficient manner. It is my belief that people are typically within a spectrum of need where they either 1) need to disclose what they have been holding inside; 2) need the skills to cope with what has happened or what they think might happen; 3) somewhere in the middle of needing someone to listen but stay focused on solutions for today. Life is full of tough moments and important transitions which impact our functioning and sometimes requires new skills and ways of solving problems.

Sometimes life is hard, and we've tried talking to family, friends, colleagues, and other trusted individuals in our lives. Sometimes we feel like no one in our lives will really "get it." I have experience and regularly work with clients facing issues related to marriage and relationships, as well as mental health issues including anxiety, depression, addiction, grief and loss, burn out, and narcissistic abuse. Having a trusted counsellor to talk through some of these issues helps you feel heard and like you can make meaning from both the challenging and the good experiences of your life.

I use a combination of CBT, DBT, and narrative therapy, alongside mindfulness and somatic practices.
When did you last feel "light"? If you’re living with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, panic, conflict and fear, it feels like you are always looking for ways to "get by", cope, and maybe lift some of the burden. Although your circumstances, experiences, and needs may differ, you are not alone. People who face these things often share a common desire- to feel lighter, not weighed down by what they have gone through, or are still going through. Whether by reconnecting with yourself, developing effective ways to manage your symptoms, or simply finding a safe space to rediscover your laughter, it is possible to find healing, peace, and even joy.

You lie awake at night with a million thoughts and worries running through your mind. And wake up feeling overwhelmed by everything you need to get done. You set super high expectations for yourself, then feel like you can never measure up. You’re living with your own worst critic - that internal voice that’s always telling you that you’re not good enough. Maybe you also live with the worry that something terrible could happen at any time, and that you won’t be able to get through it.

Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) Counsellors
How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?
Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophising or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?
It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?
To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?
CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
