In our sessions, I focus on your unique story, acknowledging the pain of experiences like interpersonal trauma or the impact of substance use on your world (as two examples). Together, we navigate through the complexities, gently addressing family dynamics with empathy.

I use attachment-based and body-centered empirical research, body movement, EMDR, parts work, and expressive techniques in my practice.
Hi, I'm Alex! I'm experienced in helping other adults who feel stuck or disconnected. This happens within family, cultural, or societal systems, during development, transitions, and trauma, and can go along with chronic stress/nervous system dysregulation, a lack of trust in self, or recurring intense emotions/sensations such as anxiety, anger, or sadness. I often work with people who have tried cognitive/talk therapies and are ready for something different that can lead to deep, lasting internal change, and people who are aware of patterns and the "why" of things but want more than a toolkit of coping skills and regulation tactics.

Currently accepting new clients! I’m a registered social worker with experience supporting children and families. My approach to therapy is based in attachment theory with a strong understanding of trauma. I believe that sessions are most successful when the developmental stage of the child is considered.

Welcome! Life is messy, beautiful, enduring and at times intensely painful and confusing. My intention is to create a safe space for you to land, nourished with empathy and understanding. Many of us are reaching outside of ourselves for happiness or utilizing avoidance strategies to cope; creating a void or level of fear that is often challenging to describe and keeps us in frantic overwhelm or a numb detachment from our inner joy. Being Neurodiverse, I hold a unique understanding of different traits and sensitivities and tailor support for a peaceful partnership with yourself and the world around you, if that is a desire you hold.

I specialize in working with adults and young adults, particularly those in or allied with the 2SLGBTQ+ community, navigating complex trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and more. I understand the challenges of moving through a heteronormative, neurotypical world that wasn’t built for queer or neurodivergent minds. Queer and neurodivergent individuals often learn to adapt and survive within families, social structures and religious spaces, that weren’t designed to support them. If you feel stuck in old survival patterns and are ready to break free, heal, and grow into your most authentic self, I’m here to guide and support you.

Many of my clients seek consultation with specific intentions or goals for therapy from the outset, while others reach out to clarify their position regarding life events. It is common for people to have multiple concerns that could benefit from therapy, but feel unsure of where to start. I also meet with people who are doubtful about the usefulness of therapy, yet are in search of a protected setting to work through one of life’s struggles.

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
