I have always had a great love for people and animals, which has led my Social Work practice to where it is today. As a Certified Animal Assisted Therapist with a Bachelors Degree in Social Work I am able to incorporate animals into the therapeutic process to assist all my clients through their personal journey. I truly believe and have personally witnessed how animals have such an amazing ability to understand us and help us heal through our struggles.

I have been practicing as a Mental Health Therapist since 1987 and I have found Self Regulation Therapy the most helpful modality yet. It gives me joy to see how people leave their emotional discomfort behind and move in exciting new directions. My interest is in post traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety, issues of chronic pain and sleep problems. I work with children, adults and families and I have worked extensively with First Nations communities. I am licensed as a psychologist in Alberta and Saskatchewan and a member of the Canadian Association for Couple and Family Therapy.

The impact of trauma on a person's suffering and how they cope can manifest in many negative ways. Anxiety, depression, loss of self-worth, hopelessness and an inability to care for oneself emotionally and psychologically are common issues. A person may be easily triggered, become more reactive, or shut down completely. This in turn can impact their personal and professional relationships. To pursue a life of calmness requires all our inner strength, our courage, commitment to self and the spirit of championing change.

Hello! My name is Pam Hutchings, and I am proud to call Treaty 6 Territory – Homeland of the Métis – the place where I take up space. My work is rooted in creating a safe, inclusive, and non-judgmental environment where you can show up exactly as you are. When did you last feel "light"? If you’re living with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, panic, conflict and fear, it feels like you are always looking for ways to "get by", cope, and maybe lift some of the burden. Although your circumstances, experiences, and needs may differ, you are not alone. People who face these things often share a common desire- to feel lighter, not weighed down by what they have gone through, or are still going through. Whether by reconnecting with yourself, developing effective ways to manage your symptoms, or simply finding a safe space to rediscover your laughter, it is possible to find healing, peace, and even joy.

I strongly believe that the relationship between a client and therapist is the key factor in supporting change and as a result, I always make it a priority to provide safe spaces for individuals to share their stories. This allows us to work together to create a supportive plan that will assist them in overcoming their challenges. Counselling involves advocating for clients within their many social systems, modeling empowering behaviors by teaching clients how to access services, and encouraging clients to become advocates for themselves within their communities.

Healing from relationship trauma is possible—and you don’t have to face it alone. I specialize in helping people recover from betrayal trauma, narcissistic abuse, and other wounds caused by painful relationships. Whether these experiences began in childhood or developed later, they can disrupt your sense of self, body connection, and relationship with others. You might struggle with people-pleasing, anxiety, perfectionism, or a feeling of being too much, yet not enough. Together, we can process these experiences, attune to your nervous system, and create new patterns that help you feel grounded, confident, and connected again.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
