Art therapy is a combination of art-making and talk-therapy. No experience with art or art materials is required...and there is no right or wrong way to do it. In each session, you will have time and space to create, pause, reflect - and to use art as a tool to explore new ways of accessing and understanding your emotions, current situation, body, and needs. Using creativity and expression to find balance, manage stress, depression, anxiety, mental health issues and the myriad of other un-eases that trip us up in our daily lives. Because sometimes words alone just don't suffice.

My approach to art therapy is very much grounded in creative process – exploring art materials in different ways to see what they can do, how they behave in different combinations, and how those different materials and processes make you FEEL. Some sessions will be spent working on a particular project, and others will be spent mucking about & making a mess.

Creativity begins before we have art materials in our hands. It begins with personal and collective agency, with the decision(s) that we make to seek community, support, and space. It feels important to describe and recognize creativity as more than an art-related process, but also a way that we can live, imagine, understand, and create change in our lives.

Shauna Kaendo's Groups

Maybe Probably Not a Mother

Workshop and conversation group on the topic of choosing (or considering) NOT to become a mother. For support, conversation, creative processing and ongoing opportunities to meet other women who are also struggling with (or looking for support around) this sometimes VERY difficult, and always VERY big decision. Choosing to not have a child is a legitimate choice. And you may feel alone, but you're not.

Patchwork, Visible Mending & Autonomy

We will explore ideas around visible mending as a metaphor for considering our flaws, broken bits & wounds. Adorning our imperfections. Strengthening our understanding of our needs, and supporting (and reinforcing) our capacities to repair and connect, and find our voices. Patchwork as a feminist act.

Aging Creatively

PLEASE NOTE: This group is for women 35 years +. This is a space to discuss, consider and make art around our experiences of aging. And all of the sometimes unsettling, sometimes liberating, and sometimes curious parts of that. We will get into ways of accessing and supporting a creative process, personally and within a group, through tactile and process-grounded exploration of materials. And we'll share two hours together, creating, laughing, maybe crying (because, well, Menopause), and mucking about with art materials.
