Welcome, courageous human. If you recognize your patterns (& still struggle to change the harmful ones) . . . if you find yourself overwhelmed/triggered all over the place by the state of this world, or your family, or your relationships, I see you. Come in to the courage room. (The good news: you're already there, in the courage room of your brain-body-spirit.) If you want to heal: betrayal trauma (including sexual assault, incest); anxiety or stuckness; or require support during a big transition, please reach out. (FYI, my hypnotherapy work is different than regular therapy. Learn more about both here: www.karenconnelly.ca).

As a queer non-binary psychologist, I combine my professional and personal experience in my work with clients. I support queer adults manage and mitigate the impacts of Queer Burnout. What is Queer Burnout? It’s a distinct flavour of burnout where the exhaustion is caused by the reality of navigating life as a queer person (see www.talltreepsychology.com/blog/is-queer-burnout-a-thing). More precisely, I work with 2SLGBTQ+ adults looking for support in managing exhaustion, prioritizing their needs and setting boundaries.

I recognize the inherent beauty in each individual's uniqueness and believe it is essential to honour it. My practice places great value on the concept of parts work, where we all parts of us are acknowledged and integrated, even the parts we have disowned or rejected. I approach each client and their parts with a curious lens, meeting them where they are. My aim is to create a safe and non-judgmental space, that allows one to feel comfortable being their authentic self. I firmly believe that living a life aligned with one's values can bring a sense of purpose and meaning, and I am dedicated to helping my clients achieve this.

My philosophy is Existential, meaning that we are free and therefore responsible for our choices, We are the authors of our lives, and we design the pathways we follow. My basic premise is that we are not victims of circumstance because, to a large extent, we are what we choose to be. Life is a cycle of transitions and experiences, presenting opportunities and challenges. Often the most important life lessons comes from our suffering. My aim is to assist people to develop their meaning and purpose, by encouraging them to explore options, in order to achieve a more meaningful existence.

We often believe that we are alone in our suffering, that no one has experienced or could understand what we are going through, or conversely, that the suffering of others is much greater than our own, that ours does not deserve attention. Fear of judgment and vulnerability can keep us from reaching out when we need it most. That is why I believe there is power in creating space to explore obstacles that hinder us from thriving. Whether you are making sense of your past, navigating issues in the present, or planning for your future, it would be my privilege to walk alongside you on your journey of healing.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
