I work with adolescents and adults experiencing a variety of concerns such as grief and loss, trauma, interpersonal trauma (e.g., emotional, physical, or sexual abuse), eating disorders, addictions, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and body image concerns. I emphasize the importance of understanding how your cultural background, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity/expression have influenced your unique life experiences. As well, my approach to therapy is trauma-informed; I seek to understand how your life experiences and circumstances have shaped who you are today and influenced your present day struggles.

I appreciate you taking the step towards looking after yourself. It takes immense courage whether you are seeking support for the first time or returning to therapy. I wish to support you with the steps you are taking. Some people have specific goals for therapy, while others may be unsure in the beginning. Wherever you are at is a good starting point. In work with me, I strive towards establishing a collaborative space where you feel seen, heard, and for your treatment to be tailored at your pace towards your goals, both immediate and long-term.

Banupriya has a strong commitment to being helpful, no matter the approach. Her approach to psychotherapy is integrative and is rooted in the belief that longstanding difficulties in our relationships with ourselves and others have their origins in our early developmental experiences. These difficulties may include abandonment anxiety, perfectionism, conflicts about dependence, difficulty being vulnerable with others, challenges asserting boundaries, feeling stuck in unsatisfying relationship patterns, and excessive self-blame.

I also have extensive experience working with people who struggle with eating disorders and body image, as well as those who are enduring the challenges of integrating their cultural identity.

Life can be challenging and take its toll. Though we're all doing the best we can, given our circumstances and the resources available to us, we all struggle sometimes and often need extra help from others to flourish. If you're reading this, then maybe you're considering therapy as one of those helpful resources for yourself. My one-on-one clinical work with adults experiencing a range of issues – anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, interpersonal conflict, major life transitions, and identity-related struggles, among others – has shown me just how helpful therapy can be.

Deciding to seek help is a powerful step toward better mental health. Through my experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families, I understand that difficulties may arise regardless of one's age or phase of life. From life challenges to transition periods (e.g., changing careers, schools, relationships), to traumatic experiences, it can be difficult to make sense of our selves or our directions. I am proud to support clients from all walks of life (inclusive of all gender identities, sexual orientations, abilities, races, cultures, and relationship types) in achieving their own unique vision of success.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
