Undertaking psychotherapy takes an act of courage. It is not easy to turn and face the very challenges that are underlying the symptoms you are experiencing. Yet, facing these obstacles head-on is exactly what can lead to profound emotional, physical and spiritual transformations. We each possess the capacity to live fulfilling, meaningful lives if unobstructed. Finding out what is contributing to your symptoms and what messages they are bringing can lead to your making the types of changes that can transform your life. I look forward to taking this journey with you!

If you're searching for a psychologist who combines the latest in evidence-based treatments with a deeply caring and supportive approach, I'm here to help. I have worked in various community and hospital settings, specializing in the treatment of depression (including self-esteem, perfectionism), trauma, substance misuse, and emotion dysregulation (including emotional avoidance, borderline personality). I believe that one size does not fit all, which is why I integrate evidence-based treatments, such as DBT and CBT, with new research and therapeutic approaches to meet the unique goals and needs of each individual.

Maya Angelou once said, “there is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you”. I am here to support you in expressing your untold stories. I will witness and listen to your untold stories and help you express and process them through the tools that expressive arts therapies provide, particularly art. Art therapy is a less challenging medium to explore your emotional needs. Through our art therapy sessions I will help you catch those overwhelming emotions and entangled thoughts. Together we will be able to find the best strategies for you to make the changes you need to feel better and heal.

The teen and young adult years can be tumultuous and fraught with challenges. Many young people experience difficulties during this time which can result in emotional, behavioral, social, academic and/or family issues. Therapy provides an opportunity to stop, reflect, and talk about issues confidentially and openly. I work individually with teens aged 14 and older, as well as adults, in an environment of compassion, non-judgement and respect. Clients and I work collaboratively to explore concerns, examine different perspectives, and work through challenges and obstacles to change, in order to make healthy choices.

Therapy can help people better understand themselves and find greater meaning in their lives. People enter therapy for a wide range of reasons, often involving difficulty solving a problem in their lives on their own. Some people, for example, are having difficulty in a romantic relationship and wonder how to improve the relationship, or end it. Other people experience conflict or anxiety in a wide range of interpersonal relationships and enter therapy as a means of improving their communication skills and the quality of their relationships. I help people in both monogamous and polyamorous relationships.

Hello! My name is Charmain Banton she/her/elle, and welcome to my profile. Life can be unpredictable sometimes even when we plan for the best and the worst of it, but even without life's unpredictability's we often find ourselves in situations that make us feel stressed, worried, anxious and scared. However, most people do not want to live out their days in turmoil and distress but would rather choose peace and enjoy their interpersonal relationships. I offer the space to work through these hardships on-line in my new private practice.

I think it's safe to say that we are all living through a moment of profound uncertainty, with heightened feelings of anxiety, depression and isolation. My hope is that, together, we can help you reclaim a sense of connection with yourself and your community, reconnect with experiences of joy and pleasure, and move through and integrate painful emotions and past experiences.

*CURRENTLY NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS* I work primarily with couples, and individuals wishing to address relationship issues. I enjoy working with couples to establish new ways of communicating with one another so that they can have closer, more fulfilling relationships. I also work with people going through transitional moments in life , when everything is possible. From difficult break ups to career changes, these moments can provide tough challenges, but also opportunities for people to redefine themselves and their goals.

I am a registered Psychotherapist and Social Worker in QC. I subscribe to the idea that suffering is a natural part of the human experience; we suffer and experience discomfort so we can cope and grow. It is possible however that we can exceed our threshold of suffering and our normal coping mechanisms are no longer sufficient. This is when our discomfort begins to feel like pain, anxiety, and depressive thoughts and is no longer beneficial to our growth. I like to think of my role as the collaborator and support system for times like these.

We all have a need to feel heard. Whether it be about something seemingly small or about a deep-rooted trauma, feeling seen, heard, and understood can make a significant difference in our lives. Through a process called Drama Therapy, so many parts of our lives can be explored: relationships, colonization, racism, gender, disability, neurodivergence, and so much more. Through talking, movement, play, and creativity in the presence of a trusted drama therapist, any adult or child can explore the personal and societal dynamics within their life along with the relationship between mind and body to create a balanced healing process.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
