As a clinical psychologist with over 15 years of experience, I help teenagers, adults, couples or parents make sense of their past experiences so that they can have more fulfilling lives in the present and future. I have a special interest in working with individuals and couples with trauma who struggle with self harming behaviours like eating disorders, suicide, self injury, as well as people struggling with borderline personality disorder and emotion dysregulation. Beyond these specific issues, if your goal is to understand, appreciate, and break old patterns that are standing in your way, I am here to help you in that process.

Change is difficult and it is hard to take the first step in seeking out therapy support. I know it takes courage to start the process. Most people I see want to feel better about themselves, less anxious, happier, more content. They often want some help for their kids or teens or for the family as a whole. When you start therapy with me, we focus on what you would like to be different in your life, what a small step towards your hopes would look like. We connect to that hope, because hope is what keeps us going. We also work to connect to your inner resiliency, your ability to bounce back.

I work with couples and individuals providing in-person therapy as well as virtual therapy which have been exceedingly popular as it provides more flexibility in today's culture. In couples therapy I incorporate gottman theory, emotionally focused therapy (EFT) and attachment therapy. I work with individuals suffering from various anxiety disorders, as well as depression, suicidality and grief related to infertility. I have an eclectic approach, incorporating cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) techniques as well as pulling from different theoretical orientations such as attachment theory and motivational interviewing techniques.

Life is full of ups and downs. We face challenges everyday and frequently feel overwhelmed by our emotions. We have many wounds inside us that need to be healed from the past. Although it seems painful to look at those wounds, they can be healed by exploring our inner world and emotions.

Healing is possible, especially for those feeling rejected, burdened, and alone. When we find ourselves feeling "stuck," it often has more to do with how we grew up and what we have learned, rather than who we are at our core. This belief has guided me in my work, and I have been honoured to collaborate with individuals, couples, and families in addressing past wounds, disconnection, fear, guilt, and shame. I value the uniqueness of each client, as it serves as a cornerstone in resolving their life's challenges. Therefore, my sessions aim to provide a space for one to come as they are so that they can leave better than they were.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
