Accepting new clients - Does your appearance or relationship with food consumes your day to day? Do you often worry what others think of you? Or rarely feel like enough? I support clients who struggle with eating disorders (like anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating), food restriction, emotional eating, overexercising, body image, and self-esteem. I know the path to recovery can feel scary. And... what lies on the other side of recovery is worth it. In an effort to shrink ourselves, we also end up shrinking our lives. It's my hope throughout counselling you feel comfortable taking up space, so you can experience more of life.

When life's challenges become too overwhelming, our mind & body can feel stuck, out of control, like there's no way out. You may feel disconnected from your body, not fully present in your everyday life, or in a constant state of alarm. This pain can start in early childhood & is built on throughout our life, or it can be a single event that destabilizes our internal resources. It’s important to remember these responses are normal adaptations by the mind & body to abnormal situations. This dysregulation can show up in our lives as anxiety, chronic pain & illness, people pleasing, exhaustion, negative thoughts, or low self-esteem.

I understand that struggling can make us feel hopeless, unmotivated, and frustrated. My human experience allows me to identify with the challenges you are facing, because I face them too. It is my calling to help others at a human level on this journey of healing, and through counselling, you can feel empowered to reclaim your confidence and take back control of your life. Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better. - Maya Angelou. What does it mean to live your best life and do better? For each of us, the common thread is a deep desire to be seen, heard and loved for who we truly are. Often, the twists and turns in relationships with our families, partners, children, friends, work and other life activities, can challenge us to be our true selves and to know happiness. Our earlier lives create our belief system, many of our behaviours and coping strategies. To enjoy our best lives some of these well-trodden pathways often require significant shifts.

Self Esteem Counsellors

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
