Hello! Throughout my professional life I have had the opportunity to work with children, teenagers and adults who have struggled with issues such as grief and loss, depression and suicidal ideation, anxiety, interpersonal relationship difficulties, and self-esteem issues. I take a relaxed and non-judgmental approach in working with clients, in hopes that therapy will be as comfortable and organic as possible. I recognize that struggling from time to time is an inevitable part of life, and sometimes you just need a little bit of outside help, or a different perspective, while you work through the tough times.

When it comes to living, life can be full of stressors, disappointments, changes, challenges and losses that can cause a range of emotional, mental and physical responses. In therapy, I take the approach that all experiences, both internal and external, can create opportunity for growth, fulfillment and greater meaning. Counselling services can range from short-term solution focus treatment to longer-term therapy/analysis. The treatment plan will depend on your individual needs, the preferred outcome, your ability/willingness to access services and ultimately, the best course of treatment for your unique situation.

I work with young people who struggle with anxiety, self-worth, self-confidence, self-expression, and coping skills. My sessions are not the traditional 50-minute in-office talk therapy. Sessions are up to 1.5 hours, using relational therapeutic experiences (art, play, experiential, and talk too), based on the interests of the young person. I work with young people in experiencing the tools that will help them to resolve their concerns, giving them the opportunity to practice in their life-space. Appointments are available for evenings and weekends. I prefer to come to you for young children as they are more comfortable at home.

Does it seem like even though you try so hard, you just can't feel confident and happy? You're exhausted. You overthink. You criticize yourself. You should have figured things out by now, but you feel stuck and it's not for lack of trying. In your life this can look like anxiety, lack of motivation, procrastinating, impostor syndrome, over-eating, low self-esteem, unsatisfying relationships, a discouraging job or even depression, and feeling like you’re not enjoying life and don’t know what to do anymore. I know these feelings too and how exhausting it feels and I want to let you in on a little secret. This is not your fault.

Picture a sacred space of human connection that invites you to make room for the complexity of emotion and experience, moving towards meaning and personal values. In our sessions, there is the invitation to cozy up with a warm cup of tea, slow down, and reconnect with yourself, practicing self-acceptance through exploration. From a place of gentleness and curiosity, I aim to be courageous alongside you as we navigate the thoughts, feelings, and sensations that seem too big to carry alone. Because, let's keep it real, being human is hard, and healing begins with the permission to embrace our messy, imperfect selves.

In my initial sessions, clients usually say, “I want someone that gets me.” This is a shared feeling; I also want my therapist to “get me” and connect with me. Hence, I use evidence-based approaches to build this connection with my clients, honoring their stories and enabling them to feel heard, unjudged, and respected. This alliance, I believe, is fundamental to the results we collaboratively attain in therapy. I work with children, teens, young adults, seniors, couples, and families from a person-centered, systemic, and strength-based lens.

I see strength as an innate characteristic in all people. I also understand that it can be difficult to see that strength within ourselves in times of hardship and pain. It can be incredibly challenging to explore the most vulnerable parts of our being; our innermost thoughts and feelings. I believe that this work can begin in a non-judgemental, safe and supportive environment that empowers individuals to make the positive changes needed to live happy and fulfilled lives. I believe the key to successful therapy is developing strong therapeutic relationships with my clients rooted in empathy, trust, mutual respect, and understanding.

Self Esteem Counsellors

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
