Too often, people struggle and suffer needlessly in life. They dwell on the negative, struggling in pain and indecision. They might feel overwhelmed by negative emotions – anger at injustices, pain at injuries, grief over loss. Perhaps they feel saddened and discouraged over repeated disappointments in life or work. They might be experiencing anxiety, confusion, sadness, or depression. But it doesn’t have to be this way. There is a way through this maze of negative emotions. Change is possible. (Check out my website, www.gwenchappell.com, for more information.)

It's hard to navigate through life with feelings of anxiety & depression, relationship issues, the inability to set proper boundaries with others, or struggling with low-self worth. Our life experiences can have an effect on us in unexpected ways. The feelings of sadness, anxiousness, overwhelm, distress or being stuck can seem to have a life of their own, causing us to feel helpless, frustrated or confused. I want you to know that you're not alone & there are ways through counselling to help support you in finding your way again. My goal is to help clients get to the root of their struggles and to develop a healthy sense of self.

Carter’s Counselling was founded by Katharine Carter, who is a social worker by training. Katharine recognized that, naturally, many services and supports exist in large urban centers such as Saskatoon, however access to resources is more limited in smaller communities such as Martensville. Katharine has made it her mission to ensure that Martensville and surrounding areas also have access to counselling, mental health services and other resources. Carter’s Counselling was created out of this social work value: that everyone should have equal access to services, regardless of where they live.

I have been in the education and social wellness field for almost 20 years, specializing in counselling individuals, couples, and families to live purposeful, joy filled lives by focusing on Mental and Emotional work first. As Alfred Adler suggested, “first we think, then we feel, and then we act”. I help individuals navigate through issues related to stress, anxiety, depression, and life transitions. I have a special interest in working with couples and relationship issues. My approach relies on extensive experience in Solution Focused Brief Therapy, TEAM-CBT, and MI.

Accepting new online clients! Living with chronic illness, disability, or neurodivergence is hard. Getting through the overwhelm of everyday life feels impossible. You're starting to feel like all you think about is your condition and everything it has taken away from you - work, hobbies, sleep, relationships. Your family and friends don’t get it. They try to help and probably mean well, but sometimes the dismissive way they say things makes you feel worse. You try to hide your symptoms to seem “normal” but inside, you feel like you might break.

Lauren is client centered and straight forward. She understands and recognizes the way that trauma can effect one's life. Trauma changes how a person regulates their thoughts and feelings and their ability to care for themselves emotionally and psychologically. Our body's way of coping is immediate and on survival mode and if we never learnt how to cope, we don't know how. As an expert in guiding one to learn how to take their power back at your darkest hour and at your pace, is freeing. Lauren is always willing to meet you where you are.

Most of us have areas in our lives where we just can't seem to gain ground, find healing or know how to take steps towards our goals. Like so many, you may feel like you can't shake a deep sadness, fix a broken relationship, or find courage to take control of your life. I would love to work with you to help you find a way forward in your journey. Or, maybe you need someone to process new opportunities with, help you to find the confidence and strength to work towards a dream, or help you heal from past hurts and develop new coping skills.

I believe that each person desires to be engaged in thriving relationships, and we do best when connected with others who take the time to listen, to validate and to offer us a safe space in which to process thoughts and opinions...without judgment. I strive to provide this safe space for clients. Offering an environment of support, where they can effectively unpack, and learn from the experiences of the past, thus guiding them toward increased freedom and opportunity for their future.

Accepting new clients, my credentials are in part scholastic however, my approach stems from the practice of doing my own healing work. Parents cannot take their children past the point of their own level of maturity. The same applies in therapeutic practice, walk the talk! Thus, presence in therapeutic relationships is the basis to addressing issues with addictions, anxiety, relationships that drive you crazy, anger, cultural issues, career issues and simply letting go of what does not work in your life. I offer services in both official languages! Do you have adult children who struggle with addictions, I can help.

Life is hard. You're overwhelmed. None of it makes any sense, and what you've been trying hasn't worked. The first step is admitting you need help. Congratulations! You're here. You want to feel whole again, like a "normal person." You want a sense of freedom in your life, and a sense of connection to what you're doing with your life. Maybe you even know you want to help people, or do something specific with your life, but don't know how in the heck that's going to ever happen. These are the growing pains of life, and your effort to make a plan and commit to this growth will serve you immensely.

How can I find a therapist in Saskatchewan?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
