I like to work with clients who feel stuck, who cannot find a way out of their ongoing struggles. They may or may not have tried many different solutions, but they are hoping for significant, long term improvements to their mental health or relationships, and they need help. At the same time, they also want to participate in their healing journey. They realize or come to realize that, ultimately, they are responsible for their mental health and they want both learning and tools that will be ongoing resources so counselling will not last forever.
I help clients write their own stories and develop new patterns, new ways, of dealing with difficult experiences, feelings, and thoughts. This often involves looking into past experiences that have helped shape current patterns, working through the issues that come up, and then exploring new possibilities for better living, for thinking, feeling, and doing.
Reaching out to a new counsellor is difficult. Will this person care? Will they listen and try to understand my unique experience and struggles? Will they, can they help?
