Trauma, depression, and other mental health issues can often cause individuals to become "stuck" leading to feelings of resignation or hopelessness. It can often feel like the individual is at the bottom of a well which keeps getting deeper, with the light out feeling further and further out of reach. It can lead individuals to believe that there is no path forwards, or that any path forward is one devoid of meaning or fulfillment.

Are you seeking an alternative way of healing and ready to explore? Open to letting go of old hurts in order to experience a breakthrough? You desire to release your old patterns of behaviour and are seeking a therapist that will partner with you by listening deeply, challenging you, and celebrating with you. You are motivated to do the work to get the results you’ve always wanted (in individual or group sessions). I work with women who serve others in healing arts and business. These women are family-oriented and many don’t want to parent like your parents did.

I believe you are the expert in your life and even though you may not know it, you have all the answers within you. Unfortunately sometimes life can make accessing these answers difficult. Trauma, mental health issues, addiction, work and family pressures can all impact our ability to connect to our inner wisdom and happiness. I have found through personal experience that talking to a trained professional in psychotherapy who is kind, caring, non judgmental and emotionally attuned can support the process of being able to listen to ourselves and reduce our suffering. I work with a team of therapists at Spacious Mind Counselling.

I believe that effective therapy takes place in an atmosphere of safety, respect, and caring. When a person comes to therapy, a healing process is already underway. As this process is recognized and strengthened, the client is free to move toward wholeness. I use empathic listening and questions to help clarify the presenting problem and set it in the context of the person's life journey with its healthy call for spiritual and psychological growth. Writing, guided visualization, role playing and art may also be used to bring forth inner wisdom and to explore alternative ways to meet challenges.

If you're struggling with anxiety, depression, grief or other losses, coping with a past that includes traumatic events or childhood experiences, and want to find ways to build your own mental and emotional resiliency, then it can be helpful to work with someone to find ways to heal, feel supported and heard. You may also be worried or anxious about the way things are in world related to post-pandemic life, climate change, conflict and economic uncertainty. Or, you may struggle to feel understood as someone who is gifted and/or highly sensitive, or may be experiencing challenges in your close relationships or with your partner.

So, you’ve been feeling anxious, down, and restless lately, searching for something to help you feel on track again, and more yourself. Perhaps you’ve had one or more difficult life experiences that you’re having trouble letting go of, or don’t know how to move past. Maybe you're thinking of making some changes, or change and upheaval have already found you in ways you didn’t expect, turning your life upside down. You’d like to move forward, and it’s hard to know how.

It can be so hard to manage your day-to-day when anxiety, trauma, and a general sense of unease fill your mind (and body) with negative thoughts and sensations. You might be feeling stuck, but you're also searching for the right support because you have hope that you can heal. I recognize the value of truly knowing that you’ve not only been heard, but also understood. Sometimes this seemingly simple act can spark the beginning of a healing journey. I believe that therapy should be a collaborative and empowering process, and whenever possible, one that seeks to focus on strengths rather than to pathologize weakness.

Trauma can shake the way you interact with yourself, your loved ones and the world at large. I want to work with you to reconnect with yourself again. To feel safe enough to not just survive but to live. People living with trauma can carry a lot of shame and it can be difficult to talk about the things that you are facing. Therefore my goal as your therapist is to create a warm space for you to heal. In my work I embrace your natural gifts and incorporate creative forms of expression that come naturally to you into our therapeutic work.

I believe you (my client or possible future client) to be the expert in your own life, and I am the passenger on your road to healing. As a passenger, it’s not my place to howl at you to turn left or slow down. But I will keep you company, I will help you navigate, and I will point out stop signs and animals running into the road. Clients I’ve worked with like that I am welcoming, positive, and inviting, and that I understand their stories without judgement.

Motherhood is such a profound time of change and challenge, and in a time where support is needed more than ever, mothers are often left feeling more alone than ever. The worry, the feelings of inadequacy, the scary thoughts, the frustration, the exhaustion. As a nurse, psychotherapist, and mother, my expertise has developed through years of working in perinatal and women's health, as well as through my own experience in motherhood. I work with pregnant and postpartum mothers who are struggling as they navigate the challenges of motherhood.

When life’s challenges feel like they’ve become too much, you might find that you’re struggling to manage work, relationships and parenting; you may feel isolated and have difficulty connecting with your partner; perhaps you feel stuck in the same old thoughts and behavioural patterns; or you have a hard time recognizing your old self. When this happens, knowing which way to turn, or reaching out for support can feel daunting.

Life can be overwhelming and it can be difficult to find meaning in who we are over who we are told we should be. No matter the issue, be it addressing major life changes, grief, sexuality, gender, building meaningful relationships and setting boundaries, or the stress of day-to-day living, having someone to help guide you on that journey can be helpful. There are societal benchmarks we are made to believe we must conform to and anyone who falls outside of that structure can be othered or alienated simply for being themselves, I am here to help you and/your partner(s) makes sense of that journey in whatever way is best for you.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.
Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
