I believe the most important part of my role is to create an environment and relationship that is safe, and therefore, I work from an overarching anti-oppressive, trauma-informed and feminist lens.
There are times when we just don’t feel like ourselves. For some of us, this means feeling overwhelmed by our thoughts and emotions, while for others the disconnect can come from feeling nothing at all. This internal “ickiness” can show up through our emotions, thoughts, or in our body, and is often a scary, confusing, and unsettling experience. This intuitive feeling is typically caused by misalignment; whether it’s having conflict within ourselves, feeling out of step with those close to us, or feeling out of place in the world around us.

Sometimes we need support navigating the complexities of life. As individuals, we experience these complexities in unique ways, often feeling alone. You may be navigating grief, anxiety, anger, fear, trauma, relational concerns, transitions, self-worth or feeling overwhelmed. My goal is to cultivate a trusting, accepting relationship that holds space for your unique story, a space where you can feel seen, accepted, supported, and valued.

Maybe your feeling lost, not sure who you are anymore. Starting over, empty nester, getting divorced, not nice to yourself when you make a mistake, you worry about everything. You compare yourself; you have been called a people-pleaser. You'd like to put yourself higher on your priority list, but that feels really uncomfortable. Is there something missing in your relationship like trust, intimacy or good communication? Do the same problems and arguments keep coming up? Has there been a betrayal or an affair? Do you struggle to communicate, ask for what you need and accept help from others?

If you’re here, then you’ve probably run into a very difficult time in life, and you’re looking for ways to get through it. A metaphor I find helpful is the idea of life as a journey, with lots of good terrain, but also lots of tough terrain. The tough terrain can represent many different struggles: relationship difficulties, stress, depression, anxiety, family challenges, loss… you name it. A counsellor can be thought of as a local guide who is familiar with the tough terrain, and has experience helping people navigate the most difficult parts of their journey.

May believes that all people, regardless of their personal struggles come to therapy with inherent strength and capacity and that through the therapy process, these strengths can be mobilized into positive action. May is a strong proponent of working from a strength-based practice framework when counselling individuals and couples. She understands differences due to culture, race, poverty and sexual orientation and incorporates these into her practice. May’s philosophy is that fulfilling relationships are the key to our happiness. That includes relationship to family, friends, workmates and the relationship we have with our self.

My work is deeply rooted in the core of who I am.  When you show up in my office you won't find a freudian style couch to lie on, a note pad in my hand, or a wall of credentials (although I certainly have those too!). Instead you'll get my authentic self, the healing relationship that we form, and probably some tea.

In our relationship - yours and mine - you will receive care and support without judgment.
Relationships can give us purpose and joy, but they can also be so complicated. This can be especially true when we put extra care into tending and repairing relationships, but are left feeling lonely and frustrated. You may be craving care, acceptance, and belonging. Instead, you may be feeling stuck, discouraged, overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and questioning if things will ever be different. Whether you’re feeling this way in your romantic, friendship, parenting, or family relationships, please know that you’re not alone, and that counselling can help.

My training and experience have allowed me to work with a variety of concerns, including Relationship Concerns, Relational Trauma, Anxiety, PTSD, Grief and Loss, Trauma, Self-Esteem, Disordered Eating, and Burnout.
There are many reasons you may seek counselling. You may be feeling on edge, or be struggling to connect in your relationships. Perhaps, you feel worthless or have low self-esteem. It may even be that you find yourself experiencing heightened emotional reactions, without knowing why. Sometimes, we can also have deep fears of being left, without being able to point to a specific "cause". Many of us can struggle with people pleasing, and struggle to set boundaries with those in our life. Maybe you can't seem to pull yourself out of a "funk", despite practicing self-care. If any of the above resonates with you, I can help.

While I work with a variety of issues, I specialize in supporting individuals and couples with relationship issues, addictions and mood disorders.
Therapy can be a transformative journey, one that holds the potential to foster feelings of radical acceptance and self-compassion, cultivate a sense of inner peace, and provide healing and care to each and every part of you. Developing awareness of yourself and your relationships can often be the first step toward creating change. Together, we'll identify your strengths, explore patterns that may be holding you back and give space to those deeper parts of you that have longed to be seen and understood. We will also work through any events or self-talk that may be creating distress or keeping you stuck.

As a relational therapist, I specialize in experientially working with self-discovery, relationship health, intimacy, and attachment trauma. I find what is often missing in our lives are the deeply attuned connections where we feel seen, heard, and understood. Generally, I operate from an intersection of attachment, neuroscience, plant medicine, and somatic frameworks. In my practice I welcome all individuals, couples, and people in multi-partner/poly relationships across the whole sexuality spectrum.

Relationship Issues Counsellors
While need for human connection appears to be innate, the ability to form healthy, loving relationships is learned. Some evidence suggests that the ability to form a stable relationship starts to form in infancy, in a child's earliest experiences with a caregiver who reliably meets the infant's needs for food, care, warmth, protection, stimulation, and social contact. Such relationships are not destiny, but they are theorized to establish deeply ingrained patterns of relating to others. The end of a relationship, however, is often a source of great psychological anguish.
