I provide support and guidance to girls and
women
to fully and authentically come into themselves. I understand the complexities of the daily experince of being
female
in our society and how difficult it is for
women
to be strong, caring and assertive in our society. I take a
women
-centered approach to mental health and do not label behaviors and emotions as disordered but to understand these as responses in the context of your life. I strive to help my clients understand that we have to face our discomfort first before we can let it go. This takes great courage and vulnerability on your part.

I provide a
woman
- centered approach to mental health, as a licensed psychologist and life coach, that is personalized to fit the needs and personality of each individual
woman
.
Women
's mental health may be affected by reproductive- related events (e.g., the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause). As such, the possible impact of biological factors need to be understood and incorporated in a holistic approach, that includes psychological, social, and cultural factors, for each
woman
to receive optimal treatment. Within this context I provide diagnostic evaluations, psychotherapy, and consultation for a wide variety of emotional, behavioral, and adjustment concerns.

Women
’s issues have always been close to my heart.
Life is more stressful and demanding than ever before. I believe in resilience and the ability to change and have a better quality of life. I have worked in industry and the community, providing a link between the home, school and the workplace. Integrating 40 years of experience in education, working in hospital social service in oncology, psychiatry and then private practice, I can help ease the load. Becoming grounded in mindfulness practice reduces daily stresse. Step by step, we work together so that you see the possibilitities and can make the changes you want to feel better about yourself, your relationships and your life.

While we often think that pregnancy and having a baby is a blissful time, it isn't always and I'm determined to help
women
and families know that it's nothing about which they should feel ashamed.
Sometimes "expecting" is not what you expect! If you are thinking about having a baby, struggling to conceive, are pregnant or are within your first year postpartum and are concerned about your experience, I can help. Sometimes too and tragically, pregnancies don't always end with a happy outcome. Whichever situation you are facing, I can offer you both individualized support or in a group setting so that you don't feel alone and isolated in your current struggle. I work collaboratively with my clients and my style is very conversational. I want you to feel comfortable and at ease in coming to therapy.

People often seek therapy when they would like to work on issues such as stress management, personal loss or life cycle changes. In individual therapy, I support clients by providing specific strategies for changing unwanted behaviours or thoughts. A couple in distress may feel there is no way out of their troubled relationship. By observing the interactions between the partners I help couples change dysfunctional behaviours, strengthen friendship, increase intimacy, resolve problematic patterns of communication, improve emotional attachment, build resilience and enjoyment that each partner derives from the relationship.

Loving and being attracted to each other unfortunately doesn't mean you reliably arouse one another. Many healthy, wonderful relationships in fact yearn for greater erotic connection and sexual fulfillment. By meeting with me, there is absolutely no need to be concerned about immediate commitment to ongoing treatment. For some concerns, even one meeting can be an important step. I respect your financial investment in this process and seek timely effectiveness. Trained at Columbia University, my work is non-judgmental and confidential. Seeking support can be challenging. It can feel scary to explore truths, reflect on hard feelings, and create change. Together, we will build a collaborative therapeutic relationship to gain insight into your life, and allow difficult experiences and patterns to emerge. During sessions, we will experiment with new ways of thinking, feeling, and relating that will ultimately deepen your understanding of yourself, identify barriers to change, and increase insight about these issues.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
