I work using an integrative model, primarily based on Mindfulness,
Cognitive
Behavioural, Emotion-Focused, and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy approaches, but will tailor my approach to your unique needs.
There are periods in life where you might feel stuck and unable to move forward. Hardships are a part of the human experience, as life can lead us in unexpected directions. But you do not have to struggle alone. I offer a space to heal, grow, and learn more about yourself and your needs. I'm here to guide you to reflect on where you are and where you'd like to be. I will challenge you and encourage you to challenge yourself. My aim is to create a safe, warm, and accepting environment to help validate and work through your apprehensions, support the changes you would like to make, and develop the strength to accept and move forward.

**Please note that the best way to reach me is via email either directly from this site or at deborah.schwartzman@mail.mcgill.ca** We all feel sad and anxious at times, but some of us worry excessively about things that are unlikely to happen, feel tense all day long, or feel so unhappy that it becomes impossible to do the things we used to enjoy. My work with individuals is to get to the bottom of the problem and find solutions. I draw on principles of
Cognitive
-Behavior Therapy (
CBT
) to explore how your thoughts, feelings and behaviors interact and affect your ability to cope with challenging situations.

My priority is to create a warm, engaging and non-judgmental environment so you feel safe exploring your concerns. I believe in a strengths-based and collaborative approach to counseling that explores practical solutions towards change. As a practitioner, researcher, and professor, I know there is no one-size-fits-all therapeutic intervention. I borrow from several theoretical and practice frameworks including
cognitive

My therapeutic approach involves flexibly incorporating
cognitive
-behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and dialectical-behaviour therapy.
As a psychologist, I value developing a deeper understanding of the people I work with, encouraging them to share their story and allowing me to see the world through their lens. I understand what it means to feel disappointed, disconnected, and to struggle to maintain changes. Therefore, I know how important it is to feel heard, and to be guided in a helpful way toward meaningful goals. I work with both individuals and couples to help them better cope with difficult life transitions, to better develop closer, more connected relationships, and to overcome specific difficulties like eating disorders and anxiety.

cognitive
, body, emotional, social and spiritual/existential.
Counselling is one of the most powerful instruments of change whether its depression, grief, anxiety, relational issues or seeking help due to feeling overwhelmed, unhappy and dissatisfied with life. Our distress and overwhelming emotions are often a wakeup call to alter how we function and adjust the choices we make in life. Within a safe and supportive therapeutic space, speaking aloud and verbalizing emotions, thoughts and behaviours will allow you to view them from a new perspective. We will find new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving while collaboratively creating new tools to work through life’s particular challenges.

Not accepting new clients - Are you aware of your issues, but can't seem to make the changes you want. Has past therapy helped but only to a point? Just when you think you were past the distress, a current event triggered a range of emotions that leaves you overwhelmed, distraught and confused. I address issues cognitively and emotionally using EMDR and other therapies to gain a better understanding that helps you change in positive ways. Anxiety, depression, relationships are only a few areas that we can work on together in a compassionate and empowering manner.

In my practice I use an Integrative Family Systemic approach, which includes EFT (emotionally focused therapy), Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy,
CBT
(
Cognitive
Behavioural Therapy) as well as Solution Focused Therapy.
People often seek therapy when they would like to work on issues such as stress management, personal loss or life cycle changes. In individual therapy, I support clients by providing specific strategies for changing unwanted behaviours or thoughts. A couple in distress may feel there is no way out of their troubled relationship. By observing the interactions between the partners I help couples change dysfunctional behaviours, strengthen friendship, increase intimacy, resolve problematic patterns of communication, improve emotional attachment, build resilience and enjoyment that each partner derives from the relationship.

Seeking support can be challenging. It can feel risky to explore truths, reflect on hard feelings, and create change. Together, we will build a collaborative therapeutic relationship to gain insight into your life, and allow difficult experiences and patterns to emerge. During sessions, we may experiment with new ways of thinking, feeling, and relating that will ultimately deepen your understanding of yourself, identify barriers to change, and increase insight about these issues.

How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?
Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario (catastrophizing) or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.
When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?
It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.
How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?
To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.
Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?
CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
