The goal for my clients is to help them understand and apply solutions that the field of psychology can offer. My approach is rooted in cognitive behavior therapy, with the flexibility of utilizing other approaches tailored to clients' needs or the specificity of the problem. An important element of therapy is positive psychology, encompassing personal growth and human development. Combined, these therapeutic orientations help clients develop thoughts and actions to help manage difficult situations or challenges they are facing. Importantly I also help clients gain new skills to feel better about themselves and the decisions they make in life.

Therapy can help people better understand themselves and find greater meaning in their lives. People enter therapy for a wide range of reasons, often involving difficulty solving a problem in their lives on their own. Some people, for example, are having difficulty in a romantic relationship and wonder how to improve the relationship, or end it. Other people experience conflict or anxiety in a wide range of interpersonal relationships and enter therapy as a means of improving their communication skills and the quality of their relationships. I help people in both monogamous and polyamorous relationships.

There are increasing personal problems which do not meet traditional psychiatric disorders, but concern developmental 'family-of-origin' dynamics, impacting adult functioning-regarding work, intimacy and creativity. Although external factors are often real and painful: self justification, rationalization and avoidance/denial often defeat heartfelt goals, dreams, desires and ones unique potential regarding school/work, intimacy, creativity and future possibilities. I focuses upon changing these maladaptive patterns in relationships, feelings, thinking and behavior: a journey requiring time and effort before ardent goals are achieve.

You might be feeling like you’re constantly at war with food, your body, or your own expectations. Maybe you find yourself stuck in cycles of restricting, bingeing, or purging—or you just can’t turn off the critical inner voice. You may also be navigating intense academic pressure, social anxiety, or a deep sense of self-doubt, especially in high school or university. You’re doing your best to hold it all together, but inside, it feels overwhelming. What you want most is relief—a sense of ease in your body, clarity in your mind, and confidence in who you are. You’re ready to feel more in control, more connected, and more understood.

Hello, I'm Echo Jiang, a Quebec-registered clinical social worker fluent in Mandarin, English, French, and Spanish. I have over five years of experience in individual social work interventions. I also founded Project Résonance to provide culturally responsive mental health resources for Chinese Quebecers. Eight years ago, I arrived in Quebec alone as a young international student. Like many first-generation immigrants who have made Quebec home, I've navigated the path from uncertainty to belonging. It allows me to deeply understand those navigating life transitions, facing stressful situations, or confronting difficult decisions.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
