Are you or your child/
teen
feeling stressed, anxious, depressed, or burned out? Would you like to change unhealthy habits, improve your relationships, self-esteem, and communication skills? Are you having difficulty adapting to a new environment/life transition? Today's fast-paced society can be difficult to survive and thrive in, especially if you are juggling multiple roles or experiencing life transitions, such as changing careers or starting life in a new city/country. It can be scary to reach out to a therapist because you want to make sure that you find someone who can speak your language and really connect with you.

The familiar saying based on an ancient Chinese proverb "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step" is one which, to my mind invites us to reflect on our past and on our future. Perhaps your particular life's journey is not yet taking you in a fulfilling or rewarding direction. A painful family past, issues of loss, relationship conflicts, struggles with your
teen
, are just some types of setbacks which may leave you feeling anxious, sad, exhausted, hopeless or helpless. Today is a new day. The one in which you take that first important step toward transforming your life journey into one of meaningful growth and change.

As a CHILD and
ADOLESCENT
psychologist, I offer psycho-educational assessments (ADHD, dyslexia and other Learning Disabilities). I work with schools to ensure that your child gets the accommodations and support he or she needs. I also provide therapy to children and teens who struggle with behavior problems, anxiety and low self-esteem. Families undergoing divorce/separation are offered guidance and support. In my work I use the solution-focused approach that capitalizes on clients' existing strengths and helps them address problems in playful and creative ways. If you are worried about your child, it's time to act!

For the last 22 years I have shared my time as a psychotherapist and art therapist between the Division of
Adolescent
Medicine at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and private practice at the Queen Elizabeth Health Centre. In addition, since 2005 I have taught in Concordia University's Masters in Art Therapy. I offer a therapeutic place for adults, children and teenagers to work individually. I work with a focus on both current maladaptive patterns, origins of current emotions, behaviours and thoughts, and a strong emphasis on one's sense of self, while always finding the strengths and resilience that is in each person.

The
teen
and young adult years can be tumultuous and fraught with challenges. Many young people experience difficulties during this time which can result in emotional, behavioral, social, academic and/or family issues. Therapy provides an opportunity to stop, reflect, and talk about issues confidentially and openly. I work individually with teens aged 14 and older, as well as adults, in an environment of compassion, non-judgement and respect. Clients and I work collaboratively to explore concerns, examine different perspectives, and work through challenges and obstacles to change, in order to make healthy choices.

I believe that warmth, positive regard, and acceptance are important to find the insights and tools for an important change in our lives. It is important for me to build a therapeutic relationship with genuineness and work together to enhance self-awareness and self-compassion. I prioritize allowing each person the agency to adapt techniques to their individual experiences or needs. I have a strong interest in individuals and the impact of society, culture on the development of personality. My passion for mental health, advocacy, and counselling has guided my practice and work through trauma to find strength and resilience.

I think (and research agrees!) that the most important part of therapy is that you feel comfortable talking to your therapist and feel they understand how you see the world. To me, this means that my experiences help me to connect with you. I studied theatre performance. I lived in Asia, where I gained insight into a different worldview. I've travelled. I taught elementary school, allowing me to understand child development and family relationships more deeply. I have experience with illness, loss & complex mental health issues. I have a Master's in Drama Therapy, a Master's in Social Work & I'm completing my PhD in Social Work.

If today seems like an interminable day, and sets the stage for a profound apprehension for tomorrow, whether individually, within your couple or your family; it is maybe time to consult. Whomever you choose, be sure to be comfortable and feel safe. If you are interested in someone who has a compassionate ear and a reassuring expertise, perhaps we could work collaboratively at finding ways to foster harmony, confidence and peace for you and your close ones. Trained as Couple and Family Therapist at Syracuse University, I work as much with couples, families as individuals.

There are points in all our lives when we need outside help. Understanding your emotions and behaviors that are informed by past experiences and negatively affect your self-esteem and relationships with others is challenging. Often we want to change but don't know how. Developing a therapeutic alliance where you feel safe expressing and exploring all the parts of yourself- the good & the bad, is a valuable gift you can give to yourself. I value helping clients to explore the complexity of their beings, process pain, and use their struggles as opportunities for personal awakening and change.

Teen Counsellors
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
