I am a Licensed Counseling Therapist candidate, (RCT-C) whose specific psychotherapeutic training is anchored in Drama therapeutic processes. This is a therapeutic approach that utilizes talk therapy and engages personalized creative expression for catharsis. It is an innovative approach for those who may be stuck in old patterns or need to explore new ways to better communicate them. Clients explore alternative solutions to challenges by rehearsing alternative cognitive/behavioral responses using “what if ” imagination. Engaging an element of guided, gentle imaginative physicality helps better express what might be suppressed.

I work with clients to help them identify and tackle the obstacles blocking them from enjoying a healthier, happier, more fulfilling life. Together, we’ll work to understand how your past may influence your life today, how you make sense of and derive meaning and purpose from life, and how you can bolster your resilience when faced with future challenging experiences.

If you are struggling in your life, and want a safe, supportive environment in which to gain insight and coping skills, I would like to help you achieve that. My clients tell me they feel heard and empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives, whether it be in their behaviour (addictions, impulsivity, activation), thinking and emotional patterns (anxiety, depression, stress) or relationships (couple difficulties, parenting, family of origin).

I think (and research agrees!) that the most important part of therapy is that you feel comfortable talking to your therapist and feel they understand how you see the world. To me, this means that my experiences help me to connect with you. I studied theatre performance. I lived in Asia, where I gained insight into a different worldview. I've travelled. I taught elementary school, allowing me to understand child development and family relationships more deeply. I have experience with illness, loss & complex mental health issues. I have a Master's in Drama Therapy, a Master's in Social Work & I'm completing my PhD in Social Work.

Authentic communication means knowing yourself, your needs, boundaries and patterns, and expressing them responsibly and with love. People who see me want to see how their repetitive, harmful patterns have held them back from getting their needs met. Together, working on self-esteem, relationships, patterns, and communication skills can lead to lasting change in your life. You have the capacity to grow, to heal from whatever may be holding you back and to connect with your happiest self simply by truly being You. Self-acceptance, love and taking responsibility for yourself and your needs allow you to be HAPPY.

Everyone has emotions, some of us feel them too much and struggle to manage them effectively. You may often find yourself feeling frustrated or angry with small things, and then shaming yourself because you "should have known/done better." You may find yourself feeling depressed or sad, and then feel afraid that "I can't do anything and nothing will change." The way you feel makes sense, and at the same time these emotions are the thing that are getting in your way. It can be very scary to change, and also you can give your self the chance to do different, feel different, and ultimate be different.

All of us have, at times, struggled to live our lives in a way that feels fulfilling. We can become stuck in a cycle of negative thinking, dreary feelings, and ineffectual behaviours. In the midst of the many challenges in life, having someone share part of the journey with you and help provide clarity can be enormously helpful. I am a psychologist with twenty years of experience counselling individuals, leading groups, and supervising therapists-in-training. I have successfully treated a variety of needs and find meaning in working with grief and loss, anxiety, depression, and trauma.

I am trained to help adults, children, adolescents, men, women, families, and professionals better cope with a wide variety of emotional, relational and personal challenges. If you are feeling overwhelmed, out-of touch with yourself or generally unhappy and enjoy a genuine conversation with another person willing to reach out to help, than I believe we would be a good fit. I developed an eclectic and culturally sensitive approach to therapy, heavily influenced by humanistic/existential, positive psychology, CBT, and expressive art therapy.

Healthy connections provide a secure base from which we can reach our full potential. Unresolved relationships are a constant burden. Challenges such as relationship distress, infidelity and divorce can be devastating but they can also be opportunities for growth and the development of a stronger sense of self. My practice focuses on individuals, couples and families who are experiencing relationship difficulties using an approach called Emotionally Focused Therapy (www.iceeft.ca). I am also a supervisor at the Argyle Institute of Human Relations (www.argyleinstitute.org), a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist and a Supervisor and Clinical AAMFT member and Supervisor.

There are increasing psychological problems which do not meet traditional psychiatric disorders but concern developmental 'family-of-origin' attachment dynamics, impacting adult functioning-regarding work, intimacy and creativity. Although external factors are often rather 'real' and painful- self justification, rationalization and avoidance/denial often defeat heartfelt goals, dreams, desires and unique potential regarding school/work, intimacy, creativity and future possibilities.

Men's Issues Counsellors
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
