I also have clinical experience in a variety of cognitive evidence-based techniques, including trauma-informed Mindfulness (MBCT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).
I believe that warmth, positive regard, and acceptance are important to find the insights and tools for an important change in our lives. It is important for me to build a therapeutic relationship with genuineness and work together to enhance self-awareness and self-compassion. I prioritize allowing each person the agency to adapt techniques to their individual experiences or needs. I have a strong interest in individuals and the impact of society, culture on the development of personality. My passion for mental health, advocacy, and counselling has guided my practice and work through trauma to find strength and resilience.

I use a client-focused and spiritually integrated approach with tools from DBT, narrative, and solution-focused therapy.
Growing up in a Caribbean family taught me to serve others. Embracing Islam strengthened my passion for helping others. I offer a safe and non-judgmental space for my clients, inspired by the kindness of Prophet Muhammad PBUH. When I experienced a loss of purpose and an inability to tap into my inner strength, I had the blessing of meeting a female mentor Dr Tamara Gray, who gently guided me by encouraging me to re-write my narrative of my sensitivity as my power rather than a weakness.

We, as human beings, all face difficult times during our lives. These phases can leave us feeling out of control and isolated. The simple act of choosing change in your life can help you to feel empowered and on a path to a greater sense of well-being. As an integrative therapist (using cognitive behavioral, supportive, interpersonal and existential techniques), I will first help you to define your goals and then support you as you work towards achieving them. Using those techniques that best suit your particular needs and styles, we will effectively create a New Therapy tailored specifically for you.

My approach to therapy is evidence-based, interactive, relational, & motivational. As I believe that the relationship between the therapist and client is what is most healing & helpful in therapy, I strive to create a comfortable & supportive atmosphere where difficult issues can be addressed. When people feel supported & understood; they are often more able to face challenges. I also help clients become more aware of the obstacles which prevent them from leading more satisfying lives & improving their relationships. Sometimes that may involve exploring past experiences and/or it may involve learning new concrete coping skills

Counselling can feel scary and uncomfortable, but it can also be a safe and supportive space to help you unpack the difficult experiences and emotions that are weighing heavily upon you. If you can answer yes to any of the following questions, I empathize with your pain and struggle and am ready and willing to help. Are you struggling to navigate a current situation or relationship-dynamic? Are you starting to realize that your usual ways of coping are no longer working for you? Do you want to see and feel progress but don't know where to start? Is your inner-dialogue filled with shame, criticism and unhelpful ways of thinking?

The heart of great therapy starts with creating a sense of safety and comfort - and being offered the opportunity to express, understand and gain mastery over one's thoughts, feelings and behavior. There is genuine respect for the person's or couple's inherent strengths and capacities to engage in a process of change and growth. A mutual, clear understanding of the difficulties and challenges as well as the motivations, goals and expectations of the client guides the development and achievement of realistic, coherent and obtainable treatment goals - as well as greater functionality, well-being, performance and emotional stamina.

Welcome! I am so glad that you found my page. I offer a warm, judgement-free place where you can bring your whole self and be accepted just as you are. I believe everyone is doing the best they can with what they learned, and that many of the things we learned to survive may not be serving us anymore. Together we can explore these ways of coping and discover new ways of being with oneself and others that align with your personal values and goals. I will be open about what we are doing and why, and you will be in control of the process.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Counsellors

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behaviour, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioural change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behaviour; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
