Is something not quite right and no matter how hard you try you just can’t seem to shake it? You feel stuck. Life hasn’t quite turned out how you imagined it. You’re looking for fulfillment but don’t know where to start. Your kids just won’t listen. You and your partner can’t seem to agree on how to raise them. There is too much conflict in your home. No matter what you do things aren’t getting better. You’re ready to make a change but don’t know where to start. Many of these feelings and difficulties are common experiences that come and go throughout a lifetime.

Hi, I’m Jess. I’m a master’s level clinician and anxious attachment coach who has rebuilt her life after getting sober seventeen years ago and battled through her own struggles with an anxious attachment style, imposter syndrome, and low self-worth. I have now made it my mission to help hundreds of people do the same and completely transform their lives and their relationships by getting to the root cause of their issues. I’m here to help you gain the skills needed to reclaim your authority; understand the psychology behind attachment theory; and to help you put an end to self-sabotaging behaviour, and toxic relationships for good.

Life can be full of obstacles and difficulties happen whether we like it or not. Change is inevitable and often times we feel like we have no control. Sounds pretty grim I know, but in spite of all of this there is an opportunity for growth, happiness and fulfillment. The challenge is letting go of the idea of perfection and comparing ourselves to others. You are unique and so uniquely positioned to be able to overcome your own personal obstacles and live the life you want to live. I am here to support you through that process.

Are you the parent of a spirited toddler and are struggling with frequent or intense tantrums? Are you worried that your child might hurt themselves when they are upset or that they might be struggling with anxiety? Are you feeling exhausted because everything seems to be a battle from getting dressed in the morning to bedtime? Are you finding yourself resorting to bribes and threats to get anything accomplished? Do you sometimes end up yelling when nothing else seems to work and are left feeling guilty?

I provide a woman- centered approach to mental health, as a licensed psychologist and life coach, that is personalized to fit the needs and personality of each individual woman. Women's mental health may be affected by reproductive- related events (e.g., the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause). As such, the possible impact of biological factors need to be understood and incorporated in a holistic approach, that includes psychological, social, and cultural factors, for each woman to receive optimal treatment. Within this context I provide diagnostic evaluations, psychotherapy, and consultation for a wide variety of emotional, behavioral, and adjustment concerns.

Intervention Counsellors

How does an intervention work?

An intervention is a planned, structured meeting in which a person’s family or friends voice concerns about the person’s behaviour and its consequences; the goal is for the person to accept treatment. In this meeting, the person’s loved ones (often with the guidance of a trained interventionist) share how the person’s behaviour has harmed them and the consequences if the person refuses treatment. They collectively ask the person to accept a proposed treatment plan.

How effective are interventions?

There isn’t extensive research on the efficacy of interventions, in part because success is difficult to measure. Individuals often enter addiction treatment after an intervention, for example, but treatment itself may not work, especially if the person only begins due to external pressure from others rather than due to internal motivation to change. However, if all other attempts at helping someone have failed, an intervention may be worth exploring.

What are the limitations of interventions?

While a friend or family member’s intentions are in the right place in wanting to help a loved one through an intervention, there are significant limitations to the approach. The surprising nature of the event can make the person feel ambushed or judged. They may feel embarrassed or ashamed as a result, and relationships may be strained or broken. This can make it difficult for the individual to be receptive to the concerns of their loved ones and the interventionist.

Are there alternatives to interventions?

Rather than confronting a loved one through an intervention, an effective and less pressured approach is to create space for a caring, open, one-on-one conversation. This works best if the loved one asks open-ended questions, listens attentively to the answers, and frames their observations and statements with concern rather than judgment. More than one conversation may be needed, but change can take root over time.
