I work through the Psychodynamic framework.
If you're reading this, you've already made one of the bravest steps towards help and life-long change. One reason I started Centred Self Psychotherapy is because I wanted to ensure clients get incredible psychotherapists, who are self-aware, passionate & skilled. At Centred Self, we believe that psychotherapy is first and foremost about relationship – to be able to delve into even the scariest of topics with someone that you trust. We do not practice a ‘band-aid’ approach, but work to create lasting change, getting to the root of what's going on. We also offer Reduced Cost Therapy with our student clinic, and EMDR with Gina Lihou.

I aim to work collaboratively and understand my clients by using techniques from CBT, emotion-focused, psychodynamic, and mindfulness based therapies.
Welcome! At some point, you may have experienced stress, felt anxious, overwhelmed, sad, or depressed. No one is immune to these common, human conditions. Sometimes, we can work such emotions out on our own by changing our lifestyles, reading books, taking classes, or through talking with friends and family members. Other times, we notice patterns that we haven’t been able to change on our own, or issues start to overwhelm us and negatively affect our lives, relationships, and work. I hope to create a warm and supportive environment where my clients are encouraged to seek positive change and growth.

While I am trained in numerous techniques and use a variety of methods (including Intensive Short-Term Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, EMDR, Emotional Focused Therapy, Positive Psychology & Mindfulness), I respect the uniqueness of every individual and will always implement a tailored approach that caters to specific individual needs.
In my years of practice, my focus has been centred around individuals from different walks of life (i.e race, religion, gender, sexual orientation etc). Particularly, ones who have trauma, body image issues, low self esteem, fibromyalgia, phobias and/or are anxious, depressed, stressed, destructive, angry, lonely, abused and in or have been in the child welfare system. In regards to my approach, I am genuine and compassionate, but remain equally honest and direct. Rather than bombarding clients with endless questions, I aim to engage them through meaningful methods and effective interventions.

Making the decision to begin therapy can be a life altering decision. Tessa believes that finding the right fit is the most integral part of the process. Tessa wants to ensure you have customized and individualized treatment plans that suit you best. She spends time in the first few sessions assessing needs and creating this plan with you in a collaborative way. Tessa would consider herself a natural, straightforward, open and easy going therapist who finds a way to connect this with evidence-based practices for the best results.

My clinical approach blends psychodynamic, attachment and emotional focused approach.
Do you feel overwhelmed by events, feelings, people? Do you struggle with your daily tasks, interacting with others, and managing your emotions? Does it feel like you are in a repetitive loop, unable to break free, no matter how hard you try to get out? This situation might be draining and overwhelming to deal with alone. Maybe it is time to approach all these questions in a secure environment. Sharing your thoughts and feelings with a non-judgmental and compassionate person, able to walk with you on the path of self-discovery, might help you reach your full potential and self-accomplishment.

In my work, I use Family Systems, CBT and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.
My experience over the years has taught me that anyone is capable of change if they want it. Life is difficult and as people we face challenges that make us feel helpless or broken. However, I believe that we are also resilient and with support, we can get through any obstacles that come our way. I want to be a support to anyone facing these dilemmas by giving you a voice and providing the opportunity to be heard. My goal is to improve the lives of clients by enhancing their social and emotional growth and providing solutions to enhance their mental health and well-being.

I use activating-experiential means (role play, practice experiment, art ), applying brain research, attachment/developmental psychology, analytic-interpretive processing (psychodynamic); C/DBT; trauma treatment; ‘internal self-state’; play therapy.
My background holds 40yr of extensive practice experience and continued learning. Expertise:all relationship concerns; recovery/healing from emotional hurts, losses, trauma. Such events, if in early years, can instill persistent insecurity, fears, loneliness and grief, causing troubled close relationships and inner-life: Restricting our core resilient nature where we keep strong potentials to be more open, creative, confident, realistic/effective persons. Mainly treat “self-regulation” problems: Social anxiety, shame/guilt, anger, depression; Overdependencies; Intimacy-sexuality, Communication; Identity-Personality issues;Selfcare.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
