My relational psychodynamic approach incorporates aspects from various modalities including CBT, Family systems, Freudian psychoanalysis and Jungian psychology, depending on your unique needs.
There are times in a person's life when they reach an interior impasse. For any number of reasons, the realization gradually dawns on them that their inner freedom has been compromised and there is no clear understanding why. Often, this takes place in the context of relationship, whether with their spouse, family, friends or colleagues. While a family physician, social worker or another health professional can and do help, sometimes what is also needed is the help of a psychotherapist trained and certified in the art and science of talk therapy, the bedrock of all psychotherapy models. It can be the key to change and inner freedom.

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I practice medium to long-term therapy.
If you are feeling stuck or are struggling with living the life you want, therapy can help. Talk therapy is a place where you can examine your feelings, thoughts, motivations and patterns with support and empathy—it’s your space. This process of self-discovery, with the experience of the therapeutic relationship, can lead to personal growth, self-awareness, and improved mental and emotional well-being. Ultimately, this form of conversation can help you develop a stronger, more fulfilling sense of self.

My ideal client is a person that wants change in their life but is unsure of what path to choose. I do not mind what the issues are they are currently dealing with as long as the person is able to identify choices they would like for themselves so together we can sort out where they wish to head on their journey and why. I am not here to judge the choice or decide because I know that each person is the expert in their lives and knows best what they truly want. I am just here to walk the path with you because we all need the company.

With over 20 years of experience working with individuals and groups, I am passionate and experienced in building strong, nurturing relationships with my clients as we sort through life's challenges together. Particular areas of interest and expertise include stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, women’s issues, relationship issues, life transitions and personal growth. While some clients prefer short-term, highly structured sessions, others prefer a more longstanding, fluid relationship to support them through life's ups and downs. I am open to discussing all options and believe that flexibility and a sense of humour go a long way!

When you have experienced trauma, your whole system can feel challenged day to day. You might struggle with persistent anxiety, feelings of shame and hopelessness and have a bleak outlook on the future. You can feel exhausted by your circumstances and truly at a loss for how to change or heal. Trauma impacts your thinking, your happiness, your quality of life and your joy. You can often find yourself engaging in behaviours that don't serve you, trying to numb out or manage the pain. It can feel hard to get close to anyone. It can be so hard to trust yourself, or other people. I completely understand, and I help people change daily.

When we meet, I have the background and training in trauma, addiction, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and other techniques to tailor our sessions to your needs, wherever you are right now, to support you in creating the life you want.
Everything that we do is a habit that developed based on our experiences in the past. From the moment we are born, we learn how to be in this world and how to be a person. When we are struggling or suffering, and some things are hard and challenging in our lives, whether it is anxiety, depression, trauma or addiction, or things we wish we could change, it’s because we've learned a way of being that is now a habit that can be hard to change. But we are whole, exactly as we are! The changes we make are in how we relate to the experiences and events in our lives and, most importantly, to ourselves.

Through an integrative approach, I use a variety of therapeutic techniques from psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, and family system modalities to create a warm and nurturing space.
I realize that finding a therapist you can truly connect with seems like a daunting process. You may have sought therapy before, but continued to feel alone or uninspired in that relationship. If this is your first time, opening yourself to the unknown takes courage, vulnerability, and dedication that I empathize with and value tremendously.

I have training in cognitive behavioural therapy, cognitive processing therapy, exposure and response prevention, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, emotion-focused therapy, internal family systems therapy, and psychodynamic therapy.
I believe that many symptoms are adaptations intended to provide temporary relief from painful circumstances. However in the longer term, these adaptations can exacerbate distress. My practice focuses on helping people to develop more sustainable ways of coping, including examining your beliefs, accepting difficult emotions, and increasing self-awareness. Issues I work with include PTSD, eating disorders, body image, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and overwhelming emotions. I also work with clients exploring their gender identity and sexual orientation.

I use psychodynamic theory to explore clients past experiences and relational needs in order to fully understand the client.
Making the decision to begin therapy can be a life altering decision. Tessa believes that finding the right fit is the most integral part of the process. Tessa wants to ensure you have customized and individualized treatment plans that suit you best. She spends time in the first few sessions assessing needs and creating this plan with you in a collaborative way. Tessa would consider herself a natural, straightforward, open and easy going therapist who finds a way to connect this with evidence-based practices for the best results.

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist I work with the unconscious mind that "exists within your normal human consciousness".
Psychotherapy can help when: a life issue causes heartache, you want to improve yourself in some way, or life has become unbearable as it is. Meaningful progress will come from the relationship we will develop, including feeling understood as a unique individual. Feeling accepted for all that you are - both successes and failures - enables you to look at hard-to-face places about yourself, and discover new perspectives. A stronger sense of yourself will develop, and you will make clearer decisions that are right for your particular life. You will come to see yourself differently, and others will experience you differently.

I draw on attachment, psychodynamic, and grief theories, and mindfulness and narrative techniques.
Life can present us with challenges that leave us feeling diminished, confused, and unable to cope. I believe that each of us has the capacity to heal, find purpose, and create a path forward. My practice is dedicated to supporting individuals experiencing challenges resulting from past and current difficult relationships, life transitions, grief due to death loss and living losses such as divorce, loss of health and more; and challenges related to the experience of anxiety, depression, and trauma. I apply an anti-oppressive, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed lens guided by your needs, goals, and circumstances.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
