I help clients connect with their present-moment experience, while my approach is very much trauma-informed and psychodynamic.
Together we will build deeper awareness of your mind-body connection; which can develop greater self-regulation, a healthier sense of self and more satisfying interpersonal relationships! Drawing on my experiences with addiction, recovery, meditation, blended family life, and psychotherapy means I really appreciate the role a safe therapeutic environment plays in helping people effectively encounter the emotions and long-standing narratives that might be holding you back from your desired life.

Naomi Levine has been practicing as a Toronto-based social worker for over 15 years. She uses the safety of the therapeutic relationship to explore inner conflicts and unhelpful patterns that keep one stuck in distressing cycles of dysregulated mood, behaviour, and relationships. She is trained in trauma-informed approaches, including EMDR. Naomi has practiced in a variety of not-for-profit clinics and in private practice. She also supervises graduate students completing their clinical internships and has been an intersession lecturer at MacMaster University, teaching undergraduate students CBT and mindfulness.

Does your teen have trouble dealing with their emotions? Do you wish that they talked to you more about what goes on in their lives? Perhaps you are a young adult with anxiety or depression. Does making life decisions around school, work, or relationships feel unmanageable at times? Teens and young adults have so much to deal with these days. Everyday stresses can include school, family, and friendships as well as issues around identity, seeking independence, and making important life choices. The added pressures of technology and social media can make it even more challenging to come of age today.

What does it feel like to be stuck, worried, or uncertain of your life's direction? You've hoped that somewhere inside you there's tremendous potential, but right now you aren't certain how to connect with it. Feeling this way can be especially scary when it impacts your ability to fulfill, or even identify, your heart's desires. Getting in touch with difficult feelings can be transformative, and it often feels more meaningful when you explore them with a trusted therapist. Together, we will softly challenge those feelings and beliefs, while mapping out a clear path towards renewed harmony with the world.

Each of us has a unique story to tell. It captures the who, what, where, when, and why of our formative experiences and begins early on, when we are the most vulnerable. Many of us have learned to bottle it up. This “bottleneck” hardly leaves us feeling secure within ourselves or recognized by others. At some juncture, you may have rightfully tried speaking your truth to someone “safe.” But, instead of receiving empathy and compassion, you were ignored, belittled, berated. Ultimately, the feeling of being heard, understood and accepted is crucial for overall wellbeing. It paves the way for a life full of meaning and purpose.

Accepting New Clients! Welcome. If you're here, life might be hard right now. It might have been this way for a long time. What you're feeling makes sense. It might be challenging to feel like yourself. Perhaps who you truly are is yet to be discovered. To genuinely feel connected and to understand who we are, we need to understand how our past and present contexts shape the way we respond to difficulties. Sometimes, these protective measures no longer serve us. Perhaps it's time for a change so that we can move forward in healthy ways and toward empowering relationships.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
