Incorporating the mind and body, I draw from relational, psychodynamic, somatic, attachment based and trauma focused frameworks.
Life can feel challenging at times, leaving you feeling overwhelmed or stuck. You may be experiencing feelings of sadness, worry, anger, shame, fear, grief or despair. Struggling with difficult emotions can take away from living in the present moment. Instead you may find yourself dealing with anxiety, self-criticism, over-thinking, reliving painful memories and stuck in patterns that no longer serve you. Together we will slow things down so we can explore your experiences and the parts of you that may be hard to understand.

I work with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, disconnection and loneliness, and couples facing breakdowns in communication and conflict. In individual therapy, we explore the deep and often painful emotions that get in the way of feeling accepted, understood and truly engaged in one’s life and relationships, including exploring low self-esteem, self-criticism, and perfectionism. In couples therapy we uncover the negative cycle disrupting the relationship, helping to improve the connection and communication between partners. Family work offers parents new tools to connect with their loved one and repair ruptured bonds.

It's important that you acknowledge yourself for taking the step of finding someone to provide guidance. In my thirty years of experience I've learned that a big part of the healing occurs as a by-product of the relationship between client and psychotherapist. When this relationship is grounded in safety and compassion, the relationship blossoms and healing occurs. My working style is client centered and collaborative. It invites self-inquiry--leading to a deeper understanding of issues and their root causes.

Life is a rollercoaster. It’s full of constant ups & downs. For many of us, it can become too overwhelming to face it alone. Having the support of a experienced, empathic & attuned therapist who can work with you to face life challenges with more ease & self-compassion, while learning effective coping practices for future stressors can be a supportive way to navigate life’s many uncertainties.

Namaste! I provide individual, relationship and marriage counselling, in a nonjudgmental, relaxed environment. Over the last 35 years I have worked with individuals and couples guiding, teaching and helping them by using an eclectic approach, and a variety of different types of modalities depending on the particular needs of my clients. I also provide family mediation and relationship counselling for couples who have split. I am a sex therapist, working with all couples and individuals. I specialize in many areas, as I believe all issues are connected, so to treat problems in isolation is unrealistic and can be short lived.

Ikarus Mind is a team of holistic & integrative therapists. As head psychotherapist, I provide insight therapy by uncovering root issues and connecting-the-dots. I draw attention to core identity, black & white thinking, limiting beliefs, and boundaries. My career started in the hospital supporting cancer & chronically ill patients for 8 yrs. These experiences were deeply life-changing. I love working with couples, professionals, survivors, the over-thinkers, the over-burdened, the heavy-hearted, those who dream big & those who wish to overcome. My favourite thing about being a therapist is discovering lightbulb moments together.

Establishing a relationship of trust and safety is a key step in the therapeutic process. Listening with genuine interest and compassion helps to build that trust. I have been working and studying in the field of psychotherapy and personal growth since 1981. Through my own personal process, as well as my years of experience working with clients, I know the importance of listening skills, empathy, and knowledge based support. If you want help navigating a difficult time in your life, are seeking relief from depression and anxiety, or want to effect change through better understanding yourself, I would be happy to speak with you.

As a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist (EFT), I hope to help you find the strength to meet even the most difficult challenges in your life. In addition to my advanced training in EFT, I have a strong foundation in mindfulness-based practices. I'm also deeply aware of the science behind our emotional reactions, including the impact of trauma. I believe this combined approach can offer deep emotional healing and practical skills for working with relationship issues, trauma, anxiety, depression and major transitions.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
