Often becoming a parent- or struggling to become one- can leave us vulnerable and anxious in a way we have never before experienced. I feel a strong calling to offer help to individuals and families journeying through the reproductive years. I want to support you through struggles with fertility, or the grief after pregnancy loss. I can help with traumatic birth experiences, difficulties transitioning to parenthood, or relationship difficulties associated with any of these events.

This means I work a lot with clients who are struggling to create their family (infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss) or are struggling with mental health issues during and/or after pregnancy (depression and anxiety).
I am passionate about my work, and have dedicated the last 10 years of my life to helping people create change. My clients are dealing with real life issues - relationships, fertility struggles, adjustment to parenthood, family of origin dynamics, and major life transitions. I aim to create a space where clients are free to explore their fears, doubts, strengths, and needs. Some clients require a faster, more solution-focused therapy process, while others want to meet regularly and have that person to continually connect with and receive support from. I am open to both and see it as a privilege to be invited into people’s lives.

I also work with parents and Moms-to-be who experience prenatal or postpartum depression and related mood disorders, feel overwhelmed with their (new) parental role or just need to talk!.
“There is always something going on, Subha!” That’s a very popular phrase I’m hearing from my clients. Yes, there is! This is life and as long as we live it, there will always be an area that needs improvement or a challenge that needs to be resolved. How many of us have a perfect looking life from the outside but feel unhappy or unfulfilled inside? In our sessions, you will gain a new perspective that you could not if you were just on your own. Previously faced obstructions may now appear as opportunities. You don’t just learn how to cope, but you will uncover new strengths.

Many people who struggle with infertility, miscarriage, birth trauma, or postpartum depression and anxiety report feeling alone and that no one understands them. These challenges can trigger complex emotions such as feeling lost, helpless, angry, numb, or hopeless about the future. For many individuals, when they feel lost or hopeless, they just want to feel validated and understood. When they're feeling stuck, they want to know that it won't be like this forever and they may want help finding their way forward. Working with a therapist who understands these struggles can help a person feel seen and allow them to find their way.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
