I work primarily with children ages four and up through play therapy. Because we cannot expect young children to sit down and discuss their problems and feelings like adults do, allowing a child to express themselves through play is very effective. This builds on the way children naturally communicate - through play! Play also creates a safe place for children to express something that they find troubling. This means that very difficult topics can be worked through in a playful or metaphorical way which is age appropriate for the child. I completed my play therapy training through the Rocky Mountain Play Therapy Institute.

My experience includes play therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), narrative therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, and cognitive behaviour therapy.
You are the expert in your life and have the strength and resilience necessary to create your preferred future. I am particularly interested in stress management, anxiety, and small or big trauma that happen along the way. My work with eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is beneficial for a wide range of ages and presenting concerns. I also have advanced training in play therapy, which is based on developmental principles. It is a process where the child chooses objects, symbols, or types of play to express their concerns and work through particular problems.

Play therapy requires accredited training recognized by the Canadian Association of Play Therapy.
Are you concerned about your child? Do they struggle talking about things? You have come to the right place. My name is Rhonda Stimpson and I am a Registered Social Worker working exclusively with children in the world of Play Therapy. Children experience difficulties in their lives but are often too young to work through those feelings with traditional talk therapy. Sometimes those difficulties can look like behavior problems, trouble at school and with friends or sleep problems. Often all it takes is an opportunity to express those feelings and emotions with a trained therapist.

I am focused on cognitive and dialectic behaviour therapies, as well as play therapy and EMDR.
Having walked the journey myself, I am aware of how difficult the process of change can be. That's why I walk the journey with you. I meet you where you are, and collaboratively we decide what your journey to heal is. I am always excited to work with clients who know that they need to make changes to better their lives, even if they don't fully understand what those changes are. I bring in not only my formal education, but there is also room in my practice for your culture, spirituality, and anything else you need or want to use to help them on this journey of change.

Humour, play, and curiosity are also greatly valued elements in the therapeutic process.
Many of us feel like we are stuck in a certain way of life, stuck in our bodies or minds, in our thoughts, our reactions, stuck in relationships, victim to our pasts and our traumas. Many of us have forgotten who we are, what we love, who we love, and struggle under the weight of the human experience. My goal is to help you achieve whatever it is that you want in the face of your trials and tribulations. It is a sacred responsibility to support another human in their quest. We will journey your path together, taking the time to integrate your parts, resulting in a deeper connection to yourself, your loved ones, and your environment.

What keeps us feeling like we are in limbo/stuck? Unresolved issues and traumas can keep us feeling and/or thinking that we are not progressing as we'd like, resulting in many feelings of being overwhelmed, burned out, and experiencing physical/emotional pains. Over 18 years of clinical experience, I can help you to discover and identify the core issues/patterns/beliefs, while inspiring hope and courage while you walk a more integrated path living life with more joy and abundance; with feelings of rejuvenation and release; and with an expanded self-awareness, emotional balance, and clearer thinking.

Pain, heartache and suffering is not something anyone anticipates experiencing. When it comes out of no-where it may seem too unbearable to handle. Individuals may suppress what they are feeling, behave in ways they never thought they would, and/or experience secondary symptoms that mask what is truly going on! Whether it is the initial pain you are experiencing and/or years of wear and tear, please know that there is help available to you! I would be honoured to help you make sense of your experiences and take back control.

Play Therapy Counsellors

Who is play therapy for?

Play therapy is generally targeted to children between the ages of 3 and 11 who have social, emotional, or behavioural difficulties. Play therapy has also been found helpful for children who have experienced physical or emotional abuse or witnessed atrocities. Play therapy is also often recommended for children who are undergoing major medical procedures or who are suffering from chronic illness; many children’s hospitals are equipped to offer play therapy on-site. Play therapy is also sometimes used for adults; creative writing, music, and art are expressive forms that can all be adapted for therapeutic purposes.

Why do people need play therapy?

Children often do not have the language skills or words to know or to express what is troubling them. Yet they often spontaneously draw or use playthings to depict scenarios that reflect problems in their everyday life. Play therapy provides children with an array of objects and play situations to act out their feelings or experiences so that therapists can get a clear picture of what children might be struggling with and help them find solutions. In addition, play therapists are skilled at helping children understand their inner experience and find words for them, necessary steps toward helping children learn to control their own behaviour and come up with solutions to problems they encounter.

What happens in play therapy?

A child enters a comfortable playroom where they are free to choose the objects they want to play with. The play therapist will typically observe how they play with the toys—whether a sandbox, puppets, dolls and action figures, trucks, costumes, drawing and painting materials, or more—because such play provides clues to a child’s family and social relationships, difficulties they are encountering in the world, and what going on inside themselves. Sometimes the therapist may ask the child to use the play objects to tell a story about their family. Using the same instruments of play, therapists can help children discover more advantageous ways of thinking and behaving.

What kinds of problems do play therapists treat?

Play therapy can help children who display destructive or self-destructive impulses; children who seem angry, sad, or fearful; children who experience frequent social, emotional, family, or school difficulty. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, who are regularly exposed to family conflict, or who have been physically or emotionally abused. Play therapy can help children who are perpetrators of bullying as well as those who are targets of bullying. It helps children learn to identify their feelings, to express them in constructive ways, and to regulate them so they can get on with the business of development.

How long does play therapy last?

Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and they usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Each session is tailored to the individual child and the kinds of problems they are struggling with. Play that is highly repetitive often indicates a problem requiring further exploration. Therapists typically measure progress through session-to-session changes in play behaviour.
