I work with indivduals experiencing emotional dysregulation, anxiety, depression, life stage transitions, parenting challenges, low self esteem, stress and relationship difficulties.
You may be feeling stuck in patterns of behaviour, or ways of thinking about yourself and your relationships that leaves you feeling self critical, emotionally overwhelmed or feeling trapped in a negative cycle. Reaching out for support is the first step to exploring and making sense of the struggles that you are experiencing. My role as a therapist is to be your guide in gaining insight into the origin of these struggles and to support you in understanding yourself and your emotions with greater compassion, so that you can make positive changes for your future.

Parenting is hard, rewarding, and tiring! Drawing on my expertise in assisting parents navigate the stages of early childhood, and enriched by my own experience raising two boys, I'm here to provide guidance through the challenges and joys of parenthood. It's common to feel disconnected from yourself, swamped by endless tasks, and navigating relationship challenges. You can experience a sense of loneliness and isolation because it often appears that every other parent has everything under control. Every parent faces their own set of challenges. You deserve support through it all!

These areas include, but are not limited to anxiety, emotion regulation, mood & self-esteem, anger management, selective mutism, identity & self-discovery, life-adjustments, trauma, separation & divorce, parenting, postpartum depression/anxiety, and grief & loss.
Hey you! I’m Dorothy - thank you for being here. I’m a social worker & psychotherapist who specializes in supportive work with children, youth and families. I guide humans to be gentle and curious with themselves, their stories, and their environments, so that they can practice new ways of being that are in alignment with their hopes and dreams. Sometimes, systemic oppression (i.e. racism, cisheteropatriarchy, colonialism, capitalism) can affect how we reach our goals. My practice is dedicated to exploring the ways in which supportive relationships can not only support our healing, but create more social justice around us.

Parenting is hard; the lived experience of a child/youth can be hard too. Sometimes, understanding each others' perspectives can be challenging. My aim is to bridge this gap and help families work together, rather than against each other. Thinking about how you can enhance your family's overall mental health? Consider how therapy can support your family in moving towards positive change. A non-judgmental and outside perspective can help your family really listen to each other, consider differing perspectives in a new way, and offer unique strategies to direct you towards your goals.

Or maybe you're having a difficult time relating to family members or friends - unresolved tension with parents, feeling at sea with how to relate to your kids, or not feeling like you can relax & be yourself around others. The focus of my work is helping people with relationships.

I have experience with many issues including, anxiety, depression, parenting, relationship issues and trauma.
I would like to invite you into a non-judgmental, nurturing, and anti-oppressive space, where we can work together to address the challenges in your life. Some of these challenges require less support to process and work through, while others may take longer and require more frequent support to overcome. As your therapist, my goal is to understand you, your needs, and guide you to cope with or overcome the difficulties interfering with your everyday life.

My training and areas of practice include CBT, DBT skills, Psychodynamic/Trauma informed, Parenting, Couple/Family therapy, Group work.
The reasons for pursuing counselling are as unique as the individual seeking it out. There could be questions around an emerging identity, a difficult relationship or social issue, a separation/divorce or a child’s school difficulties or emotional distress. Whatever the presenting issue is for clients, there is most often over- whelming feelings of worry, sadness and confusion.

Are your childhood wounding of caregiver misattunement, neglect and abuse causing challenges in daily functioning? Are you a parent who is battling intergenerational trauma and need support? You may have worked with therapists in the past who only focused on the trauma of “commission”, aka the overt acts of abuse, but did not address the subtler trauma of “omission/deficit” that lives in your nervous system, due to caregiver misattunement and neglect. Such traumatic experiences need neurobiological approaches that heals at a survival brain level that go beyond the “talk-only” approach and also addresses deficit trauma.

I am a registered psychotherapist who has a particular interest in attachment and family therapy. I work with young people and their parents, adults and their parents, siblings of all ages, and individuals. The goal of family work is to help family members work through barriers in their relationships and ideally to reconnect and find safety together. In individual therapy I think systemically and help folks make connections between their mental health struggles and the world around them. I work with clients with depression, anxiety, experiences of trauma and the many other challenges that can cause distress.

Parenting Counsellors

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
