My training and areas of practice include CBT, DBT skills, Psychodynamic/Trauma informed, Parenting, Couple/Family therapy, Group work.
The reasons for pursuing counselling are as unique as the individual seeking it out. There could be questions around an emerging identity, a difficult relationship or social issue, a separation/divorce or a child’s school difficulties or emotional distress. Whatever the presenting issue is for clients, there is most often over- whelming feelings of worry, sadness and confusion.

Parenting is hard; the lived experience of a child/youth can be hard too. Sometimes, understanding each others' perspectives can be challenging. My aim is to bridge this gap and help families work together, rather than against each other. Thinking about how you can enhance your family's overall mental health? Consider how therapy can support your family in moving towards positive change. A non-judgmental and outside perspective can help your family really listen to each other, consider differing perspectives in a new way, and offer unique strategies to direct you towards your goals.

As a mom of 3 and survivor of postpartum depression, clients come to me looking for a therapist who is familiar with the unique challenges of parenting, because therapy should be a place where you feel seen and understood.
The transition into motherhood can leave you feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and so very vulnerable. This isn’t what you expected. Motherhood is supposed to come naturally, but nothing about this feels easy or natural. Everything has changed - your body, your relationships, your identity. You may feel sad, worried, lonely, or angry. You love your child(ren), but you miss your old life (and you feel guilty for feeling that way) and you've reached a breaking point. You want to feel calm, confident, and joyful as a mother. You're ready to feel whole again. You are worthy of this, and I can help you get there!

I am also a partner of 29 yrs & a parent of two children.
Maybe you're here because you are struggling in your primary relationship; having the same old arguments with your partner, feeling disconnected & longing for more intimacy, or dealing with a difficult life event, such as a betrayal. Perhaps you're looking for help because you are feeling stressed out, anxious, and are tired of being so hard on yourself. Or maybe you're having a difficult time relating to family members or friends - unresolved tension with parents, feeling at sea with how to relate to your kids, or not feeling like you can relax & be yourself around others. The focus of my work is helping people with relationships.

I've been a therapist for over 15 years, working with adults, caregivers, youth and children. The themes I work with include relational difficulties, family conflict, parenting, life transitions, loss, trauma, immigration, sexual orientation, anxiety and depression. I believe culture, gender, race and other identities play a role in our lives, as do safety, connection and trust. I aim to honour and create space for these qualities and my style is collaborative and conversational. I believe in lived experiences and try to bring mine, being a queer immigrant parent, to practice. I also offer therapy in English and Hebrew.

Life transitions, betrayal, marriage, parenting, retirement, and grief /loss.
Sit with me in person or dial in virtually across Canada is step one. It’s complementary. Step two we work together on what’s hurting you, maybe relationships, work roadblocks, grief or transitions. It takes bravery to say please help, it’s not unusual that there is no apparent reason. It is ok to need a listening ear to open up new choices on how to live life. It’s ok to need to download, telling me your life’s pressures starts from the get go. Need to relax, I have just the thing ask about experiencing deep relaxation “Let it go”. Virtual throughout Canada, connect for the confidential support you deserve most provinces covered.

My practice is integrated as I draw from several models; Relational, Bowen Family Systems, IFS and Connected Parenting.
I am a family systems therapist who works with youth, parents and couples who have experienced various mental health challenges or are facing stress and anxiety due to relationship conflict. The families I tend to support are often feeling disconnected from one another and stuck in patterns of relating that often intensify their existing challenges. The foundation of my work is in building relationships where clients feel seen, heard and understood, allowing them to draw on their internal strengths. My role as a social worker is to help clients understand themselves and their relationships in a way that supports authentic growth.

These areas include, but are not limited to anxiety, emotion regulation, mood & self-esteem, anger management, selective mutism, identity & self-discovery, life-adjustments, trauma, separation & divorce, parenting, postpartum depression/anxiety, and grief & loss.
Hey you! I’m Dorothy - thank you for being here. I’m a social worker & psychotherapist who specializes in supportive work with children, youth and families. I guide humans to be gentle and curious with themselves, their stories, and their environments, so that they can practice new ways of being that are in alignment with their hopes and dreams. Sometimes, systemic oppression (i.e. racism, cisheteropatriarchy, colonialism, capitalism) can affect how we reach our goals. My practice is dedicated to exploring the ways in which supportive relationships can not only support our healing, but create more social justice around us.

Parenting Counsellors

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
