There are times when everyone struggles to find ways to balance their own needs vs. all of life's competing demands. When this balance becomes uneven due to additional stressors in our relationships, school or work lives, we often forget to prioritize our emotional health. This can lead to chronic stress and problematic behaviours that impact functioning. I believe that the adolescent brain is inherently resilient, and I also know that there are times when these stressors can have a profound impact on one's overall wellness. Psychotherapy can give adolescents the chance to explore the root cause of these stressors.

Children and youth often experience strong emotions (anxiety, sadness, anger, fear) that are the roots of their behavioral challenges, self- and emotion disregulation, and other adjustment issues. These issues negatively impact their quality of life. Through play and art therapy, I facilitate and witness the unfolding of children's lived experiences. I help them to explore and express their thoughts, emotions and memories that may not be easily expressed using words. Through interacting with their personal symbols in the play or their art, children gain self-acceptance which is the bridge to healing the inner pain and trauma.

I use play and art to facilitate my counselling approach with children. I focus on teaching children coping skills to manage intense emotions. Many children struggle to allow space for both positive and negative emotions. Some people find it difficult to feel any positive emotion such as joy or excitement and others find it difficult to sit with negative emotion such as anxiety or sadness. The reality is, it’s healthiest to be able to feel a broad range of emotions, including the positive and negative.
