When we work together it will be about supporting you in moving out of ways of being that no longer serve you in a helpful way and into a more connected, aware and preferred place. Collaboratively working to understand and shift the impacts that traumatic events have had on your life and building on your energy levels so that you can feel a deeper sense of ease, belonging and happiness. Be it parenting support, family therapy or individual youth and or adult sessions, together we can create a space that upholds your dignity and highlights your intrinsic strengths as we navigate changes together towards a more preferred sense of you.

I am 39, a spouse, and a parent.
I use Internal Family Systems therapy combined with Polyvagal theory and somatic work. Creating a strong and non-dogmatic container together is the cornerstone of my practice. I am especially skilled at attuning, and providing company in places that you may have previously felt alone. We will work towards helping parts of you that may be stuck in fight, flight, freeze, fawn, or collapse. Many of my clients are people in their 20s and 30s exploring the transitions and challenges of adulthood while reckoning with Family of Origin trauma.

There are times in life when we are faced with challenges that leave us feeling stuck or in crisis. As difficult as these times may be there is also an opportunity for growth and change. Counselling can provide an opportunity to gain the tools and insight needed to navigate through this process in a healthy and supported way.

Sometimes in life we can feel stuck in patterns that don’t make sense but that we just can’t seem to change. Do you feel like you're on high alert for signs of danger, feeling anxious? Or do you feel emotionally flat, only half alive? When you feel upset, do you find yourself with your back up, ready to fight? Do you feel like running away, escaping the situation? Do you find yourself frozen and collapsing, not able to act? You know you’re capable of overcoming these patterns, but how do you get there? The fight, flight, & freeze are survival states, hardwired into our nervous system through childhood trauma or overwhelming events.

Acknowledging that you need support can be vulnerable. Did you know vulnerability is a strength? Whatever your current challenges are, your choice to lean into support, your resilient heart and your desire for change is leading you somewhere new. Many believe they must struggle through transitions and challenges alone, but these times can be easier, bring insight and become enriching when they are shared with a compassionate and reflective witness with tools to share. It is my honor to support you from past events that haunt you, through patterns ready to shift and into a purposeful life oriented toward your dreams for the future.

Accepting new clients! This is definitely not what you expected. You may have thought that everything would fall perfectly into place, that becoming or being a parent would be the most natural thing in the world. Now, you’re finding that the fears, the anxiety, the self-doubt, the grief over your old life, or the disconnection from your partner are ruling your mind. You might be having a tough time sleeping, noticing some scary thoughts popping up, and just getting through each day is a trial. You wonder if you’re really connecting with your partner or your child(ren). You might be wondering who you even are these days.

Parenting Counsellors

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
