As a therapist who goes to therapy, I know the anxiety of getting started and the value of having done so. As many of us have, I’ve faced my fair share of adversity – from a difficult childhood, to a cancer diagnosis, and learning to live with adult ADHD (and everything in between). It’s easy to feel stressed out, discouraged, lost, to not what to do or where to turn… that’s where I come in! I understand that life can be a hard and heavy thing to do and know the benefit of having a safe spot to land - to work through hard times, learn to cope, or invest in our self-development.

Hi I'm Kathy! I am of Algonquin Anishinaabe and English European heritage. I am a proud member of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation. Like many Anishinaabe people, I come from a family of story tellers. Whether we were sitting around the kitchen table or the campfire, stories were the way we understood where we came from and how we knew where we belonged in the world. As I got older, I began to wonder about the stories that weren’t told. The stories that were too painful to share. Becoming a therapist has allowed me to create a safe space to explore, understand, and give voice to our most painful stories.

The most important relationship we have is with ourselves - and sometimes that relationship can be the most challenging to heal. Maybe you’re struggling to adjust to unfamiliar situations and feel uncertain about the future. Maybe you’re feeling ‘stuck’. Or maybe you’re curious and open to self-exploration! I have experience supporting individuals with life transitions (i.e., job loss/new employment, divorce/separation, pregnancy/prepartum/postpartum, return to education, relocation), anxiety, stress and burnout, ADHD, trauma, interpersonal challenges, and relationship and intimacy challenges.

Finding the right therapist for you is an imperative and sometimes daunting task. To help you make this important decision, let me tell you a bit about myself. I have always enjoyed connecting with others, and have worked in the social work field for the past 15 years. My approach to therapy is non-judgmental, honest, and may even include a sarcastic joke. I have found that humour can be an excellent catalyst to healing and connection. I have worked with individuals and groups struggling with a variety of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and trauma.

I work mainly with professionals in healthcare, emergency services, social services, education, energy/body work, and correctional services. I understand the unique needs of individuals working in helping professions and the health and relational consequences of chronically stressful workloads. It can be difficult to find the “right” therapist for those working in such specialized fields. I get you. I’m not a typical talk therapist and am passionate about delivering an individualized service that meets your needs in a way that an EFAP provider cannot. You can find more information and direct contact details at freedomevny.ca

As a registered psychotherapist, I know that when we aren’t feeling our best, we tend to view ourselves as irreparable, broken, and end up directing a great deal of shame towards ourselves. I also know that pain is part of the human experience and is often trying to tell us something. When we can be curious with our pain rather than fearful, we are more able to take action to solve problems. Sitting with someone in your pain who can help you facilitate self-compassion and curiosity and identify what you may need can make a big difference.

You are worth the time it takes to heal, in whatever way feels right for you. Do you ever wonder if there's more to life? Maybe you feel an ache inside, like you have so much potential... but something is getting in the way. You might long for more clarity, fulfillment, and inner peace. But what is the path to get there? Sometimes this requires support (which can be hard to ask for or prioritize). The first step is the most important - and the path may be closer than you think.

Experiencing trauma does not have to hold you back. I specialize in supporting those who are navigating how past childhood, relational, betrayal, intergenerational, or complex trauma may have impacted their relationship with themselves, their body, and with others. This may present itself as struggling with disordered eating, emotional eating, body image, self-esteem, attachment, relationship struggles, people pleasing, anxiety, and/or perfectionism. Together, we can process past trauma, nurture our unique nervous systems, break patterns that keep us feeling stuck, and move towards a life of self-trust and embodiment.

It's not just you, life HAS gotten harder in the last few years. If you've been powering through, staying strong and carrying on, but now you're barely getting by and you're tired of feeling like you're not really living your life, it might be time for outside support. The benefit of therapy is that it's a time where you get to focus on yourself, to look at your life, and to get an outside perspective on how it could be different. You don't have to just endure, with the right support, you can heal from the past, and move forward towards a better future.

How can I find a therapist in P7B?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
