To do this, I blend clinical counselling, music therapy , and anti-oppressive approaches.
Music and creativity can be the path to healing, but can sometimes also be the cause of suffering. Particularly during the pandemic, musicians can experience isolation and disconnection from themselves and others. My goal is to help you find a space to not only heal but also learn how to thrive again. My clients are professional and aspiring musicians, and people for whom music used to be a large part of their life. People who live unconventional lives, who feel deeply, and are highly sensitive. Having taken my own journey through music and healing, I now support others looking to reclaim music in their lives.

I have been a therapist since 2008, first in the field of music therapy and have since broadened into the field of mental health and psychotherapy.
It’s time for you to have a down to earth psychotherapist that feels just like an old friend. You don't have to go about it alone. People have been feeling it, and stronger than ever before - anxiety, burnout, depression, past-traumas, change, loss, grief. Maybe you’re a young professional or maybe you’re well into your career, even retired, and ready to finally start working on (deep breath!) you. I am an experienced therapist that you can be completely yourself with. I will accept you exactly as you are. Swearing and sharing of honest thoughts permitted ;)

It is my goal to offer an accepting, inclusive, and brave space to help you feel more comfortable as you work towards your goals, whether through psychotherapy or music therapy .
“I can’t keep living this way, but I don’t know how to change.” Does this statement sound familiar to you? Once upon a time, I felt this way too. Therapy was my safe space to land, and now I hope to offer a safe space in return for the teens and adults I work with. Perhaps you are experiencing a particularly difficult season of change in your life, or maybe you are hoping to better understand yourself and work towards a wellness goal. Together, we can work to discover your strengths, unpack your past experiences and, as a team, make a plan for the life you hope to build.

I work from a client-centred, holistic and resource-oriented approach, incorporating elements from various psychotherapeutic techniques, including music therapy .
Hot take: Everyone can benefit from therapy. I spent years of my life wanting to hide my feelings from the people around me because of the stigma surrounding mental health—particularly as a second-generation Chinese Canadian woman. Once I began to accept these feelings and embrace them as part of the human experience, I was able to embark on a (life-long) journey of healing. When I discovered firsthand how transformative therapy can be, I realized I wanted to work with other individuals in assisting them with their journeys.

I am a Registered Psychotherapist with specialized trauma training in EMDR, Integrative Trauma and Attachment Treatment Model (ITATM), with Master degrees in Counselling Psychology and Music Therapy .

Are you a survivor of violence, abuse, and feel like you will never feel better? Or are you a parent whose child is experiencing mental health issues, or struggling developmentally? Are you a caregiver of a family member with terminal illness or deteriorating condition? Did you try traditional "talk therapies" and feel that you may try something different?

People who may not be able to experience other kinds of psychotherapies are often more open to the benefits of music therapy . You can develop love for life through creative music making, because music plays incredible role in human well-being. I provide a person-centred and evidence-based music therapy /psychotherapy, using a heart-centred model as a representative of the humanistic approach, and a music-centred model as a professional musician, which gives me a wide range of musical and verbal choices for implementing activities and allows me to be flexible in selecting methods and techniques.

Additionally I do also offer music therapy for in-person sessions.
I find therapy can be a branch that reaches in, something strong you use to pull yourself from a harsh inner world to more solid ground. If you feel overwhelmed or raw, what you're experiencing isn't a problem with who you are. Plenty is hard in this world. Add in factors like your history, systemic barriers, learned habits, vulnerabilities, traumas, or feelings that overwhelm your capacities right now - it can be exhausting. At best. The hopeful news is that you can change your experience: gain understanding and strength, interrupt patterns, create your solid ground, and move in a direction that's in line with what matters to you.

Meeting every client where they are on their life journey, Laura enters each new therapeutic relationship with passion, prepared to learn her clients’ stories and what makes them who they are. I specialize in expressive arts, such as music therapy and play therapy.
Are you or your child struggling? Are you concerned about handling your emotions? Does your child have difficulty regulating their emotions, controlling anger, or having social difficulties? Perhaps you are worried about how your child is coping with recent changes in the family, such as separation or divorce? You don’t have to be alone! Parenting is the most invested relationship one can partake in. There are many challenges involved in guiding little people towards becoming adults and life can force families to face events that impact children's ability to function successfully within their daily environments.

I use a blend of EMDR, somatic therapy, ego state work, trauma-informed CBT, mindfulness and music therapy to target anxiety, depression and trauma responses.
Are you feeling chained to the past and locked into “autopilot” mode? Are relationships leaving you wonder about belonging or being good enough? Trauma leaves an undeniable trail of distrust and fear in our mind and our bodies. Trauma is what went wrong and what was never given. Its imprints shape our stress response, emotional thresholds and how we relate to others. So, what if you could quiet your survival brain and take back control of your life? Therapy is about becoming the architect of your life and the master of your mind and body. It’s time to take charge and shape the new you.

As a registered music psychotherapist, I combine the benefits of talk therapy with the implementation of music therapy interventions that achieve therapeutic goals using music as the tool.
Thinking outside the box approach to traditional therapy, because no one individual fits neatly inside a box. Working together, using CBT and neurologic techniques to support you in your area or areas of need, music psychotherapy draws from traditional talk therapy while offering ways to move forward in who you are, both verbally and non-verbally. Using music offers a non-evasive and trusting medium within a clinical session and translates into a coping skill within everyday life. Please contact me for either Telehealth or in-person sessions.

Music therapy is an evidence-based approach to wellness rooted in hundreds of years of human knowledge and tradition. It can help you to change your perspective, clarify your emotions, and relax your body and mind. You don't need musical training to benefit from music therapy ; all you need is a willingness to explore the potential of music to support the changes you're looking to create in your life.

How can I find a therapist in Ontario?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
