Therapists for Teens in York, ON
To me, as a Registered Psychotherapist, human being, and author of 'Binge Crazy: A Psychotherapist's Memoir of Food Addiction, Mental Illness, Obesity & Recovery', seeking help is a strength. It requires the courage and wisdom to reach your own truths. I'm rooted in Gestalt therapy, a holistic, here and now approach encompassing every aspect of your life, from current anxieties, relationships, and family dynamics to past and recent trauma. I also include other modalities, from creative forms of expression to more structured methods. In Gestalt, you are the expert (on you) and I am the guide to help you explore what needs healing.

When someone faces challenges with mental health, I believe the right question to ask is not "What's wrong with you?" but "What happened to you?" We all face obstacles in life, but no two people react to those challenges the same way; the way the brain, body, and spirit react to the challenges is a complex interplay of our biology, childhood, personality, circumstances, and more. As an empathetic, knowledgeable therapist with both professional and lived experience, I can help you figure out how "What happened to you" is affecting you now, and how to weather the storm in a way that fits your unique strengths and needs.

Stuck. Burning out. On-edge. Resentful. Hitting rock-bottom. Lost. Hopeless. Whether you are struggling to find purpose and connection in your current lifestyle, are experiencing a devastating loss or a heartbreaking impasse with a significant other, or are asking yourself larger questions about your identity, potential and place in the world; these are the unsettled feelings that bring you to therapy. And these are the dark and frightening places that I am here to walk through with you, trusting that you will find the light of compassion, courage, and self-realization to guide you.

I support adults and youth ages 14+ with a special focus on neurodiversity (e.g. giftedness, Autism, ADHD) and trauma.
We all need a space where we can be ourselves. When walking alone gets hard, therapy can help us restore our sense of self and make life manageable again. Stepping into this space can look like many things: being curious about ourselves, making meaning out of painful experiences, coming into connection with vital feelings and needs, and understanding and respecting the parts of you that you want to change. For some of us, healing can only happen in a space that acknowledges the impacts of marginalization and the need for systemic change. From here, we can begin to find new ways of being in the world that honour all of who we are.

It is my belief that for healing and growth to occur for someone seeking help, acceptance without judgement is crucial, recognizing and acknowledging the woundedness and unmet needs within the client. This perspective encompasses and acknowledges the entire person with whom I am working, including the physical, intellectual, emotional, interpersonal and spiritual well being of the client. No one seeking help is turned away due to the condition from which they are suffering. My goal for each client is to provide a safe, trusting space so that healing and growth can be experienced.

Sometimes life can become overwhelming. In the midst of the many challenges we face, it can be difficult to remember that it is okay to feel frustrated, angry, sad, or apathetic. As a Registered Psychotherapist (RP), my approach is client-centred. I assist people with discovering and accepting all the unique aspects of themselves, encouraging self-care and to speak freely without fear of judgement. Males young and old experience anxiety, depression, trauma and other mood issues, though are less likely to seek help. ADHD and LD’s disproportionately affect males, disrupting their goals and relationships. Young males must navigate contradictory messages about what it means to be a man while managing their own emotional health. These issues tend to be at their worst during transitional life stages, such as changing schools, entering the workforce, middle life, and in new relationships.

Wayne supports youth and adults seeking help rediscovering their self-worth, fortifying challenging relationships, removing hurdles that intensify substance dependence, or living with a mental health diagnosis.
Wayne understands navigating difficult circumstances can often lead to a deficit-focused viewpoint. That viewpoint quickly becomes the narrative. Helping one recognize their resiliency and allowing for productive outcomes is his focus. Wayne also amplifies an anti-oppressive framework: factors contributing to marginalization and exclusion will be addressed.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
