Women often have to wear many hats and it's common to find ourselves feeling overwhelmed, stressed out and anxious. Does this sound familiar? You feel your stress building and you start second guessing yourself and your choices. You fear making a mistake or letting someone down. Your self doubt grows, your negative self talk is on overdrive and you're becoming even more overwhelmed! The next thing you know, you're overindulging in food, substances, spending or anything that gives you relief in the moment but this just makes you feel worse! Then one day you say ‘What happened to me? I can’t do this anymore, I need help".

Having been in counselling myself, I know what a relief it is to find someone with whom you feel comfortable to help sort out some of the stressors and troubles of everyday life. Perhaps you would like to chat about a number of issues that are piling up and you don’t know what to do. Or, maybe something really big has happened and you feel overwhelmed and like nothing in your life will ever be the same again. No matter what your concern, I'm driven to help you reach a life of peace and to no-longer feel victimized to your struggles.

I offer services in English and Spanish (Español). Many women go through toxic relationships where they feel devastated; however, they ask themselves if their perception is correct because there are no punches or blood involved. Likewise, women begin to doubt themselves as their sense of reality is altered and their cognition is put to the test. Another serious consequence of this condition is low self-esteem. Women think that they have no value and that there will be no one in the world who will love or desire them anymore. This is a call to all women who want to recover themselves. You Are Not Alone!

Not accepting new clients until January 2024. We can create change together. Each individual is different, however, we all experience distress and suffering throughout life. I believe that change is possible and we can be taught to create it for ourselves in a helpful way. Stress, anxiety, depression, life transitions, sexuality, relationships, and so many other factors, affect the way we function and how we feel day in and out. It can be overwhelming to manage at times, and seeking support makes a difference. I work with individuals on finding the strengths they have to build healthier and happier lives.

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
