Symptoms of
anxiety
, depression, loss, grief, big life changes, burn-out and mood disorders can be relieved greatly through emotional exploration, mindfulness techniques, and self-compassion. My approach is based on the belief that a deeper understanding of ‘self’ ultimately instills a stronger sense of peace and health in our day to day lives. Honing our natural ability to self-regulate and heal often begins with naming our struggles and traumas in the presence of a supportive other. From here we gain greater clarity on how to take care of ourselves, create boundaries and self-care patterns that instigate lasting change.

I have extensive experience working with children, youth and adults experiencing challenges with
anxiety
, depression, substance use, codependency, and anger management.
Life has the tendency to throw us curveballs and sometimes we have the capacity to dodge them on our own, but other times we may be carrying too much and our ability to navigate it all begins to feel unmanageable. I firmly believe that therapy is for everyone. Whether what brought you here was situational or long-term, seeking the help of a professional is the first step in healing. I provide clients with a safe and inclusive space to be vulnerable about the challenges they are facing. With your commitment to and trust in the process, we will work collaboratively to set goals and create positive and sustainable changes in your life.

Counselling is an
anxiety
-provoking experience, but my goal is to minimize discomfort by providing you with a safe, judgment-free space to express your thoughts and feelings.
I am a firm believer that we are the experts of our own lives and hold many of the solutions to issues that may be causing us distress. Unfortunately, when life becomes overwhelming, we don’t feel like experts at much of anything and even the simplest tasks can feel impossible. When this happens, having someone guide us through the fog can make all of the difference. My role is to work with you to gain insight and find those solutions from within, while providing you with support, coping strategies and humour to make this process more enjoyable.

I appreciate that seeking help can be intimidating. Many people feel that they suffer alone. People do not realize how common it is to suffer from mental health-related issues. In North America, one in five adults suffer from distress, such as depression,
anxiety
, and interpersonal problems. Psychotherapy is extremely effective at treating a wide variety of psychological issues. I provide evidence-based, individualized, and collaborative treatment to ensure the quality of care. My approach to psychotherapy incorporates cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and emotion-focused therapy (EFT).

Not accepting new clients until January 2024. We can create change together. Each individual is different, however, we all experience distress and suffering throughout life. I believe that change is possible and we can be taught to create it for ourselves in a helpful way. Stress,
anxiety
, depression, life transitions, sexuality, relationships, and so many other factors, affect the way we function and how we feel day in and out. It can be overwhelming to manage at times, and seeking support makes a difference. I work with individuals on finding the strengths they have to build healthier and happier lives.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
